F3 Championship

F3 Combat Championship

This weekend in Kuala Lumpur is an event that I have been very critical of. Not because of the fights but because of the way it is promoted, the way it is run. That being said it is something a bit different in the Malaysian MMA scene as it is a hybrid event, often mixing Muay Thai, Boxing and MMA bouts.

The biggest problem I have with the event is it is really aimed at Malays, the last of these events I attended in Johor Bahru all announcements were made in BM, which would be fine if somebody was also doing an English or even Chinese announcement as many of the fighters were foreigners who did not even realise they were being called.

Also the organisation around the event was terrible with posters being delivered a week before the event and not being displayed anywhere meaningful. Putting up loads of posters inside the venue the event is being held at is just pointless.

To then not have any refreshments on sale at the event even though the sports hall is not air conditioned really was a poor showing and frankly the turn out reflected that. There was no sign that this was an event for everybody.

You can read my reviews of that event Here and Here.

However, it's a new event back in Kuala Lumpur and so our hopes are renewed that this event has improved.

Lets look at the card, well at least that which we have, for although we are only a few days away from the event there are still gaps which makes talking about them very difficult.

Day 1" 1st Decemeber

Bout 1: - MMA

Isaac Yap (Ultimate MMA Academy) vs Mohd Faizal Bin Fozi (Malacca MMA)

Yap does not fight much, he works in Singapore and finds getting time to train difficult but he is an accomplished martial artist and it will be interesting to see how he does against Faizal (1-6) - Faizal while not having a great record is always a willing participent in these events. It should not be forgotten their is no MMA gym in Malacca, so these guys are at a tremendous disadvantage.

Bout 2: - Womens Muay Thai

Ella Tang (TNT Kickboxing) vs Rodiah Bt Nordin (Cobra)

Bout 3: - MMA

Khairul Izhar (0-1) vs Kenny Yap (Wuji)

Izhar (Azhar?) (0-1) made his debut in the Malaysian Fighting Championship bout in October, sadly it lasted just 38 seconds. Yap (2-1) is fast improving after a difficult first fight back in September 2011 against top Malaysian prospect Halsten Ng he has recorded two second round wins. He must be favorite in this bout.

Bout 4: - Boxing

Hashim B Abdullah vs ?

Bout 5: Co Main Event - Muay Thai

Mohammad Sotounzadeh (Global Elite Gym) vs Yodphed (Impakt Gym)

Bout 6: - Main Event MMA Championship Title Match

Alex Lim (TNT Kickboxing) vs Will Chope (Phuket Top Team/Team Buffet)

Chope is defending champion and is one of the busiest fighters in Asia, he fights MMA, K1 and Muay Thai events anything to keep him busy. He also has a great height and reach advantage.
Sadly I cannot tell you anything about Lim except I don't have any details on him and he is not listed on Sherdog, I don't even know how he got in a position to fight for the title. I understand though that he is a talented fighter with much K1 experience.

Day 2: 2nd December

Bout 1: - Boxing

James Goyder (MMA Mania) vs Wan Ridzuan B Wan Aziz

Bout 2: - Womens Mauy Thai

Germaine (Kambiz Warrior) vs Sudatip Wiloedram (SS Fighters Muay Thai Gym)

Bout 3: - MMA

Mohd Fouzien Mohd Fozi (Malacca MMA) vs ? TBA

Fouzien is the brother of Faizal and has a decent (3-3) record, he last loss was at the F3 event in Kuala Lumpur where he broke his leg, he took his time repairing and since then has two wins to his name.

Bout 4: - MMA

Chan Man Kong (Street Fight Wing Chun) vs Nik Harris (Muayfit)

Kong (1-3) just secured his first win at the Legionnaire event in October but really Harris (2-2) better win this if he wants to consider he has any future in MMA.

Bout 5: Co-Main Event - Muay Thai

Singapura (30THN) vs Damnern Pesantha (Impakt Singapore)

Bout 6: Main Event - Muay Thai Championship Title Fight

Amer Naseri (Kambiz Warrior) vs Chim Wiloetram (SS Fighters Muay Thai Gym)

And there you go.

Apparently the undercard fights start at 9:00am and the main event starts at 2:30pm. Which frankly seems a crazy time to run an event, but hey it's not my country.

Podcast Ep48 – We Talk F3, Phil Baroni and Stuff

So this is it Ep48, we talk F3, Phil Baroni, Stuff Like That

So as we approach our half century of podcasts it seems that the quality of the shows is seriously reversing. This show really is a struggle to listen to. (Hey we are keeping it real) I have a serious rant about F3, the Coffee Boys retard friends think it’s funny to unplug his internet connection and frankly with nothing solid happening in our area of Asian MMA except for some Japanese shows we know nothing about, We are struggling to find anything worth writing about or indeed to talk about.

So to try to make up for the cluster F that was the show after the end music is a treat. A nice excerpt from the greatest radio show ever Loveline with Adam Carolla, Dr Drew and guest David Allen Grier. Don’t say we don’t love you.

F3 Kombat Championship Day 2

F3 Kombat Championship Day 2

Our Report on Day 2 of the F3 Kombat Championship

Look I had my moan on yesterdays post about this event, so i wont go into any of the issues I have with this event here, instead lets look at what was a very successful Day 2.

Unlike yesterday I would say the hall was 99% full ready for the finals of the muay thai competition and the as Will Chope described it Super Duper Twos after the Super 4 idea was decimated by half the card pulling out.

The first muay thai fight was Some Yung Fella Ma Lad vs Mohamed My Dad – Really, some young fighter from Singapore had to beat up a man more likely to keel over with a heart attack than inflict any damage on his opponent so that fight didn’t last long as flabby belly and bandy legs never beats skill and power, dam, who knew.

The second fight was a ladies MMA event as Qin Yun Quan faced off against Amanda Loo

After last nights lackluster almost silent crowd it was a nice change today to hear lots of noise from the fans around the ring and after the almost joke muay thai fight the next fight was to wake everybody up.
These two girls did not let us down, they came to fight and fight is what they were going to do. We had a grappler in Quan against a very good stand up fighter in Loo. That’s not to say they could not fight in the others strengths, they could, but the great thing about MMA is it’s all about a range of styles and nobody can master them all.

So, the first round this fight went back and forth with stand up and ground battling and it was a very exciting and even fight.

For the second round Amanda Loo really started to make her stand up tell and she was managing to get some serious punches into Quans face. Eventually Quan knew she had to take it to the ground but what she did not expect was to be reversed and end up with Loo on top and eventually taking Quans back and inflicting a rear named choke.

It was a very exciting fight and both these young ladies put on a very good courageous show. I would like to see them both continue in MMA.

The crowd were very excited now and the noise level has risen considerably many of the audience had given up on their seats.

The next fight was a muay thai bout, the final of the muay thai super 4 and it was a great fight, three rounds of action in which after the first round it looked like there would only be one winner as the Fighter from Singapore had placed a beauty of a punch on his opponents chin that led to him falling face first to the floor and over the bottom rope. Somehow he got up and managed to make the end of the round. In the second and third rounds he managed to turn it around and it was a very close decision but the Malaysian fighter much to the delight of the kampung boys who were cheering loudly was handed the decision. A superb comeback and a very enjoyable fight.

The fourth bout was another MMA event the Super Duper two!

Teh Kah Wei vs Will “The Kill” Chope – Chope is by far the more experienced fighter and has fought internationally including at the highly ranked Philippine MMA organization URCC. Where Chope is making a run for a title belt.

All the talk before the event was of Will Chope Vs Isanu Himaru, it was generally believed these two would make the final and scrap it out but once Himaru pulled out it seems that Chope had an easy run at the F3 Champions belt.

I’m pleased to say that was not the case and Teh Kah Wei has obviously improved one heck of a lot since people last saw him fight and his physically size was proving a problem to Chope. Chope is tall 6″4′ and light having weighed in at less than 73kg. Wei is much smaller but solid and weight something like 7kg more. This was to prove a useful advantage.

We had a full three rounds and the first round was definitely very close, Wei I think surprised Chope with his strength and ability and at the rounds end I soon had three different opinions on who won the round.

The second and third rounds were easier to call as Chope used his knees and elbows to devastating effect leaving Wei with a heavily blooded nose and although right up until the end of the fight, I think it would have been a major surprise if Chope was not awarded the win.

Much to his relief he was indeed the winner. It had a been a great fight, Wei had certainly made people sit up and take notice and Chope had proved he has a warriors heart as he pulled through for the win.

At the end of the fight both fighters were spent and both looked battered, they had certainly put everything into this fight. This is what MMA is about, two hard ass fighters giving there all.

I think there might have been another muay thai fight but really I cannot be sure, I was busy talking to people and taking pictures (Hey, get off my back, I may enjoy watching Muay Thai but I don’t know enough about it to write intelligently about it).

The event for me ended there and it was a very enjoyable night, the crowd made a great noise and the fighters put in a great show. I truly believe with proper marketing, a decent venue and all the things around the event being better organized, well, I believe F3 could produce stunning events with crowd of at least twice the size of tonights effort. Even, somebody selling could drinks would have been a major improvement as the room was so dam hot as to be very uncomfortable.

Our Report on Day 1 of the F3 Kombat Championship

F3 Kombat Championship Day 1

Our Report on Day 1 of the F3 Kombat Championship

F3 Kombat Championship is on the face of it a really interesting idea, tonight for instance we have MMA, Muay Thai and Boxing matches, an excellent night out for fans of fighting. And the fights themselves were all entertaining. So what is wrong with this event?

Well it’s all about the promotion or lack of.

The rumors that have been going around are many and all mainly damming. I am not going into them here as I obviously do not know the facts. But the real issues seem to be the amount of money the promoter receives from the government to run the event and the amount of that money that actually filters through to the event.

The most obvious issues that I could see straight away were the almost complete lack of marketing surrounding the event. I live ten minutes from the sports centre that this event is in and I am interested in MMA (obviously) but if I did not actually know some of the people fighting in this event, I would never have known it was happening.

What this event needed was for the month prior to the event some serious marketing around the shopping malls and apartment blocks in Johor to make people aware of the event, some noise on the internet from the various MMA, Muay Thai and Boxing gyms who would be represented, plus of course the promoters themselves and of course the various blogs that support these sports around Malaysia and Singapore.

What this event needs if it is to create any meaningful and lasting benefit for the Malaysian government who is basically funding it, is to get people out to watch the event who are not just members of the various gyms represented and their family and friends. It should be about bringing in members of the public. Until the promoter employs a proper marketing organization to manage this. F3 will just be an event for a few people who are in the know and those who can read the Bahasa Melayu only posters which never turned up until it was too late anyway. Why, they could not have done these posters so that the majority of people who are interested in this event could read it is beyond me. But, as we would see, this really is an event for Bahasa Melayu speakers only. The event itself is not ‘user friendly’ go and watch MMA events all around Asia and the chances are they will be presented in English as well as the local language. As many of the fighters and their fans are not Malaysians, to completely ignore them is plain uncaring and arrogant. Yes, you can fight on our card but no we won’t speak your language. This carries on through the whole event as the announcements went over the heads of many of the crowd.

The DJ was a gem he seemed unwilling to actually make much effort to fill the many breaks in the event with any music and when he did it was simply awful.

There was NO glamour at this event, no dancing-girls and no ring girls, no proper MC and nothing really to make you think you were at an event. Instead we were all just fight fans gathered in a sweltering hot sports hall with not even a refreshment counter, to watch some fights. This won’t attract the casual fan. It’s what happens when a promoter does not seem to know how to market an event beyond a very narrow target demo and does not seem to care that Malaysia comprises of more than one ethnicity.

Simple fact is the Malaysian Fighting Championship which is mainly held in a bar in Kuala Lumpur is a much better place to watch fights, with air conditioning, food and refreshments available and TV monitors showing the action well run and entertaining events. It’s such a shame. Their are better venues in Johor than this sweat box and there must be better people to organize  and promote them.

The final issue with this event is the fact that fighters have been pulling out literally up to the day of the event meaning that even on the day of the fights there is no fight card available. If you don’t pay fighters a reasonable fee to travel to your event and fight, then people will pull out. Smaller events can get fighters for little or no money because the fighters know NOBODY is making any money, the promoter included. Here the promoter is making plenty, mind you if the venue was packed with fans he would have pocketed much more!

As it was I estimate that at most there was 150 assembled to watch the event of which I would suspect at least 70% were directly connected to the fighters and gyms in fact possibly more!
So, rant over let’s look at Day 1 of the fights.

Bout 1:
Was an MMA bout featuring: Antonio “The Brooklyn” Monk Graceffo Vs Hafiz

These two went at it, Graceffo was trying to take Hafiz down but was not finding it easy and so they grappled standing up, eventually Graceffo pulls off the throw and they go to the ground but, before he could really take advantage Hafiz was up again.  Hafiz came at Graceffo with some powerful kicks causing Graceffo to have to burst forward and close the gap and the grappling continued, just before the round ended Hafiz managed to take Graceffo down but the bell went before he could make it pay.

The second round started the same as the first until Graceffo managed to take Hafiz down and with a few well placed and solid hammer fists Hafiz was done, I suspect with a broken nose. He was not happy throwing his gum shield out of the ring and as soon as the result was announced he stormed off blood pouring from his nose.

I spoke to him after the event and he was still angry, he was angry that he had lost and nothing was going to make him feel better. I guess it’s good that it hurt so much for him to lose but I hope he understands everybody loses at sometime in fighting and you just have to get over it and come back stronger. I mean even Bob “Tap” Sapp has been known to lose the odd fight, OK not a good example I admit.

The rest of the event was made up of a mixture of Muay Thai bouts and a couple of amateur boxing events all of which were enjoyable.

However their was NO atmosphere in the crowd, no noise, no applause the place was not generating an excitement which was very sad because the fighters deserved better.

The last Bout of the night was another MMA bout.

E-joy from Mallaca was fighting  Kenny Ng from Penang.

It was youth against experience and ultimately experience one. Kenny Ng put on a very good show. Taking care of business within one round.

So that was the end of day one, the crowd soon left and I was left to wonder how much better it could have been with a full crowd in a decent venue with air conditioning and refreshments. I mean going back to the promoter, surely a stall selling cold drinks would have been a good idea and you could have lined your pockets with even more money!

DARE 2-12 – Pretty Boy Vs Bruce – Muayfit Malaysia Vs Impact Singapore

DARE 2-12 – Pretty Boy Vs Bruce – Muayfit Malaysia Vs Impact Singapore

Published on February 24, 2012 by  in DARE

DARE 2-12 March 17th 2012
at Club Insomnia, Bangkok. Thailand

PRETTY BOY VS BRUCE at DARE 2/2012 on March 17th!
It’s Malaysia’s Muayfit Vs Singapores Impact MMA

***** MMAnewsAsia.com preview:  There should be one hell of a lot of excitement around this fight, after all it’s one of the best, if not, THE best fighter out of Malaysia’s Muayfit Gym against a well thought of experienced  fighter from Singapore’s Impact Gym.
All the fuss around Pretty Boy (3-0-0) is from the little I have seen of him, justified, however, I am not too sure what quality of opponents he has faced, frankly none of them have been around long enough to really test him.
His last fight was against the Military Gym Fighter, Anis Syakir at Malaysian Fighting Championship on December 10 2011 and lasted just 1:14 seconds finishing in a stoppage. For a full minute of this fight there was no action and then in the space of 14 seconds Pretty Boy put a beating on Anis and it was stopped.
This weekend he will be fighting in the four man tournament at the F3 Championship in Kuala Lumpur and to win it, he will probably  have to fight Zeus from Ultimate MMA Academy in Johor Bahru . THAT will be a real test and if he comes through that a winner he will have proven himself worthy. If that is the case the anticipation level on this fight will rise considerably.
As for Bruce Loh (1-0-0) who it may seem easy to forget as the older fighter with less buzz around him in this bout. But, Impact Gym in Singapore turn out really good quality fighters and they won’t be sending out somebody who is going to give Pretty Boy an easy time and more importantly will damage their reputation. His last recorded fight was also at Malaysian Fighting Champion ship and lasted just 16 seconds. As with Pretty Boy we really learnt nothing. He jumped on his opponents back and choked him out game over.
Expect fireworks, this fight could be one of those amazing full on explosions of colour with lots of action and big bangs, or a damp squib as one or other of these fighters proves himself a class above the other. Either way it will shake up the local scene as we start to understand the real level of some of these fighters.
Here’s the deal on this fight if Pretty Boy arrives at this event still unbeaten and also leaves it unbeaten, well, then Muayfit have hit pay dirt as he will have proved himself as an exceptional fighter.**********
HERES THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM DARE

DARE is proud to present a highly anticipated Flyweight fight (57 kilos/ 125lbs) between PRETTY BOY – Allamurad Karayev and BRUCE – Bruce Loh

We know that especially you Singaporean and Malaysian guys have been waiting to see this banger for a loooong time!
That means that the rest of us should probably also avoid blinking once this fight gets going.
Taking place at DARE 2/2012 on March 17th 2012 and broadcast LIVE on www.darelive.tv and on www.gfl.tv for just 9,99 USD.
PRETTY BOY – Allamurad Karayev VS BRUCE – Bruce Loh.

Pretty Boy, who lives and trains in Malaysia, is only 20 while Bruce, a Singaporean, is 10 years his senior making this a clash between youth and experience.
Both are unbeaten and have a lot of experience fighting MMA in Malaysia. Pretty Boy has finished every opponent he has ever faced in amateur and professional MMA
while Bruce is a submission artists and has plenty of Muay Thai experience and a blue belt in BJJ.

The winner of this fight will proceed to the Quarter final level of DARE Championship and a step closer of being in the group of the first DARE Champions and the receivers of the Million Dollar Grand Bonus.
ONE MILLION DOLLARS. IN A CAGE. GAME ON

PRETTY BOY – Allamurad Karayev has faced 11 opponents in amateur and professional MMA and has stopped every single one of them in the opening round, often with a one punch knock out. He is a very confident young man and that is reflected in his fighting style as he will go looking for the KO right from the opening bell and packs a lot of power in his punches.
Don’t expect to see him throw many jabs, he likes to attack with hooks powerful enough to finish a fight instantly.
Pretty Boy trains out of the Muay Fit, Malaysia. For more information about Muay Fit, please visit: muayfit.com

BRUCE – Bruce Loh (Loh Kain Kai) has been on the scene for a long time and is a very well known figure in Singapore. He is a veteran of numerous Muay Thai and BJJ tournaments and competitions and is a very well rounded fighter although he seems to be at his most comfortable when the fight goes to the floor. It will be interesting to see whether, with so much boxing and Muay Thai experience, he is prepared to stand and bang against an opponent who has a reputation as being a knock out artist.
Bruce Loh represents Impact MMA in Singapore. For more information about Impact MMA, please visit:www.impactmma.com.sg

In 2012, with the co-organisers involved, KLFK and FMMAC has rebranded the event as F3 Championship (Freestyle Fullcontact Fighting Championship) and uses the same format of Muay Thai and MMA under a two-day event while crowning two new champions. Subsequent F3 Championship will see the champions defending their titles and more new champions to be crowned for other weight classes.
* Not Part of The Press Release – This Is MMAnewsAsia’s own opinion*
What this  event promises is firstly two days of sporting fight action covering many different levels from true amateur  right through to semi-professional. More importantly for this site which covers MMA we will get to see some very good quality MMA match-ups.
It will also be the largest ever MMA event held in Malaysia (not including free events)
It promises some good match-ups and it features some very good young up and coming fighters who may one day be hoping to fight in the larger Asian Organisations. I am sure many of them will wish to emulate Raymond Tiew and Pete Davis from Muayfit, who featured on a recent fight card by Singapores ONE FC in Jaklarta.
But most importantly what this event does is introduce MMA to a Malaysian audience who may initially be attracted to the event by the promise of Kick Boxing and therefore is an opportunity to gain new fans and even possibly new participants.
The fact that the event will be televised on Astro and that is also attracting some top quality sponsorship, speaks volumes for the growth potential of this sport.
I would normally put the event poster with an article like this, but a) it’s a already been on an earlier post of mine. b) since that post it has changed a couple of times c) frankly it’s hideous and all that’s bad about fight posters!
