MMA Invasion Malaysia

MMA Invasion Malaysia

(article by the Coffee Boy)

Rumors have been buzzing all over the internet the last few days over whats happening in the Malaysian MMA scene. Right now we have Malaysian Fighting Championship, Ultimate Beatdown, Gods FC, Legionnaire FC, and F-3 Championship.

According to a post I found on a Facebook profile page (his name shall remain anonymous for now), here’s what we have in store for Malaysia. Keep in mind we do NOT have the details yet as to who exactly is behind it (I’m guessing a mobile service company is involved?) but we will keep you guys up to date:

MMA Invasion Malaysia -  Champion of Champions

Plans (are) in progress to bring out the best Malaysian MMA fighter.
There (will) be auditions (@ designated gyms) to pre qualify all registrants so as to ensure the quality of fighters for this tournament. The auditions will be conducted by industry leaders and celebrity fighters.

Fighters who qualify can expect to go (through) an elimination step
ladder, 16-8-4-2-1 process. Surviving fighters go up the ladder. Losers of course drop off.
6 weight categories
179 fights.
Fortnightly fights for 2 months duration (2 weeks rest in between) held in hip clubs zones.
Final fights will have a 1 month recuperation period
Semi finalists square off at a pre determined venue (stadium size).

Champions can expect Cash prizes, products, All (expense) paid training stints at top notch overseas facilities 2 weeks, gym memberships, other sponsored products etc..& also overnight fame sensation. The possibility of being signed up by the biggest fight event organizer is also in the pipeline.

Of course this whole event will be shot and televised by local stations and affiliated private cable tv stations. All from the start of the auditions to the final fights.

So, get your fight shorts ready and start dreaming the Champions dream.”

Make of this what you will, but it looks like things are looking up for Malaysian MMA – fans and fighters alike.

What Is Happening To MMA in Malaysia?

Malaysian Fighting Championship Affected By Controversy

Things were looking good for Malaysia MMA, Muayfit are running two events, Balls to Brawl and Malaysian Fighting Championship, We still have Ultimate Beatdown, F3 and possibly even Gods? Now a new name Legionnaire.

Yet on Saturday night in Kuala Lumpur at the new MFC venue it would appear some people set out to damage the name of MMA in Malaysia.

During one of the bouts my understanding is (I was not there) after a fighter was awarded a red card for  breaking the rules, a member of the crowd spat at the official. A disgusting and cowardly act. I hope if this person is attached to an MMA gym that they make him apologise for his actions. If they do not, I do not think they should be allowed to participate in future events.

I also understand that their was lots of needless shouting of religious slogans, abusive language and insults of officials.

And then we had the situation where somebody part way through a bout rung the officials bell causing the fight to be (wrongly) stopped.

None of these things reflect well on the sport of MMA in Malaysia.

The people behind the Malaysian Fighting Championship (Muayfit) put a lot of work into setting up this type of event and what happened is very sad. Luckily for Malaysian MMA it does not appear to have put Muayfit off and they are already organising the next event for November 24th. Let's hope the trouble makers stay away.

Malaysian Fighting Championship – MFC 4 – The Last Two Bouts

The atmosphere tonight has been very good the crowd are certainly being very supportive of the fighters and have regardless of ability come to fight and because of that the crowd have reaped the rewards of a lively , fast-moving night.

Fight 10:  Jim “Medusa” Keong (Ultimate MMA Academy)  Vs Maximilian “Mad Max” Musumali (Shaolin Gor Chor)

Round 1:
They meet in the centre of the cage and touch gloves, then they circle for a bit and Max throws a head kick which misses, Jim also fires a head kick which while closer still misses it’s target. Max charges in throwing punches and the clinch and grapple, Max takes Jim down and is in half guard quickly. Jim is trying to stop him from taking full mount but Max starts to fire some hammer fists, he still tries to move to full guard but Jim has his leg gripped tightly. Max tries to create distance to allow him to lay some punches and manages to get full mount and again starts laying in some hard punches, Jim keeps trying to roll him against the fence, but Max keep laying in punches, Jim is covering up well but the punches keep coming.
Jim rolls, he has to try to get out without giving up his back, he is in a modified mount and Jim is getting pounded by Max, surely the ref will stop this soon, he is taking many blows, but amazingly Jim manages to escape and stand up, that was a close call, Jim shows heart and uses a teape kick to fend Max off, Max replies with a patented Nate Marquardt spinning combo, a head kick, spinning back fist and right hook all of which missed but it looked great! Max really is showing some great skills and speed here. He has Jim pressed against the cage and is trying to take Jim down again, a powerful hook by Max and Jim comes back at him with a hook but is taken down in the process. Max takes mount, Max is quick, powerful, has great reach and is in control. Max tries to posture up Jim is grabbing him and they struggle on the ground Max punching Jim and the struggle continues Jim tries to use the cage and in doig so rolls himself over and Max takes his back and slips in a tight rear named choke in the blink of an eye and it’s over. Wow, Max made a great impression.
Max wins by Rear Naked Choke in 2 minutes 41 seconds of Round 1

Main Event: Nik “The Bloodhound” Harris Vs Antonio “The Brooklyn Monk” Graceffo

Round 1:
Leg kick by Harris doesn’t quite land and then another one that does and then Harris picks Graceffo up and slams him to the ground, astonishing, He moves down with Graceffo in for the kill but before he knows what’ what, he is on his back and Graceffo is in half guard Punches to the body from Harris.
They are up again and this is some quick stuff for two heavyweights, A leg kick by Harris, Graceffo swings a big right but does not connect. The crowd is going wild with cheers of Harris, Harris, easy to see who the crowd are supporting here. A kick my Harris just lands, a front kick my Graceffo lands with more force, then a another kick pushes Harris away. Harris comes straight back with a jab, Graceffo grabs him for an attempted take down Harris sprawls on top and is going for a choke, Harris tries to transition to the back, Graceffo is defending and Harris goes back to top sprawl. Graceffo is on his knees and forces himself up and starts to lay some shots and takes Harris to the cage and Graceffo lays lots of shots to the body and lands some knees. Graceffo has Harris backed up against the cage, nothing much happening so the ref seperates them and they restart in the centre of the cage.
Kick by Harris and then a Front kick by Graceffo, Harris backing off, Graceffo again pushes him towards the cage, Harris again responds by slamming Graceffo to the ground but Graceffo grabs a leg and is soon up again and Harris lands a couple of good punches, Graceffo again comes in and pushes Harris against the cage, Harris tries to land shots but from this point on the fight is going all Graceffo’s way.
Graceffo  dominates Harris against the cage hitting him at will and just using his superior style to negate Harris’s offence. Graceffois unable to throw Harris to the ground but he can dominate him in the clinch.
Rounds 2 and 3 are pretty much all Graceffo as he dominates Harris in the clinch. He is unable to finish him but is never in any danger of losing the fight after the bell for round 2 sounds. Apart from an early flurry of cheers in round two the Harris fan club soon falls silent. A dominating performance by the Brooklyn Monk.
The fight goes the distance and it’s a Unanimous Decision to Antonio “The Brooklyn Monk” Graceffo
So that was it the end of a fun night. There were some real battles and a few mismatches and a few surprises. the organisation was smooth and efficient and all involved by doing a great job.

Referees: Arnaud Lepoint  and Eric Kelly

Big thanks to all the fighters who put on a great show.
A special thanks from the MMAnewsAsia.com crew to Paul Teo of Muayfit and Aunt Connie of Overtime for looking after us so well. Mr Kwang who sponsored our hotel room. James Goyder for burying the hatchet, Arnaud Lepont and the gang at Muayfit Elite for being great fun. Will Chope and Mark Striegl for being as much fun in person as they are on-line and finally to Eric “The Natural” Kelly for coming up to me and introducing himself. Such a cool guy, Dude I know who you are! You beat Mitch Chilson and single-handedly shut up the whole load of Evolve fans at Singapore and sent them home early without a clean sweep. YOU are the Man, you gave me the most pleasure at ONE FC by a mile. It’s only right and fair that you get another chance to show your skills on the big stage. Eric Kelly for ONE FC.
Apologies if we missed anybody, it was a fun night and we will be back.

Malaysian Fighting Championship – MFC 4 – More Blow by Blow – Fights 9 – 11

So after the excitement of the last fight the crowd were noisy and excitable. So far the organisation at the event had been smooth with no issues.

Fight 9 is Mark “Mugen: Striegl Vs Hafiz “Hard Rock”

Mark Striegl is plainly and simply a dam good fighter with experience way above this level, He has fought at Legend FC and URCC and does not really know what losing is!  Today, that will not change not by a long way. He is far to good to be here. I am sure his opponent will for many years enjoy telling his friends of the day he got his ass kicked by future ONE FC fighter Mark “Mugen” Striegl.
The bell rings and Striegl comes in fast, lands a low kick and goes for a takedown, he is in side control, Hafiz is trying to hold his head down but Striegl get’s it free quickly and from side control quickly transitions to mount, Hafiz grabs him and Striegl lifts and bangs Hafiz against the floor using his body weight to get free so that he can posture up so he can land some ground and pound. Striegl has hold of Hafiz wrist could he be about to put on an armbar but no,  Striegl goes for an inverted triangle and quickly has it locked in. Hafiz is at Striegls mercy no, he is free to pound him into next week, he does not take advantage of his opponent in that way, he tightens the triangle and mercifully it’s all over. Striegl is victorious and really showed the difference between a weekend warrior and a fast rising pro. Striegl was exceptionally smooth.
Striegl Wins in 48 seconds of Round 1

Fight 10: Lachlan “The Caledonia Kid”  Hay Vs Azrin “The Kid” (Borneo Tribal Squad)

Hay comes out and straight away throws a head kick  which just misses followed immediately by a solid punch which lands. Azrin replies with a hard body kick which Hay catches and he starts punching Azrin hard, Azrin is trying to defend himself but Hay’s punches are superfast. Azrin clinches hits back and they exchange knees and go to the ground, Hay tries to pull guard, he is trying to get a rubber guard in pulling his leg over high. Azrim is trying to get out of it and pushes him back into guard and Hay stands up and they are both back on their feet.
They are exchanging punches again what a great all action first minute! Azrin catches Hay with a really hard shot and Hay shoots in for a takedown, he does not want to get caught like that again, that was a great punch. Hay is in low and manages to get Azrin down but Azrin is on top and manages to sprawl, Hay is now trying to escape and he tries to take Azrins back, Azrin holds him off by grabbing a leg, they continue grappling and Azrin is still managing to stay on top. Hay still looks shaken. The crowd is going crazy loads of noise and excitment.
Azrin goes for a front choke, Hay pulls out, Hay lays a nice knee to the body and follows it up with a nice punch. Azrin replies with some punches of his own. Hay throws a succession of knees until Azrin has him pushed up against the cage. They move back to the centre, Hay lands another knee, Azrin has Hay of balance and lands a nice punch to Hays jaw.
Hay lands a nice head kick but gets countered to the jaw, he lands another head kick and in return another punch to the jaw, this is war an epic battle so far with no room to breath or relax. Azrin is hitting hard landing some uppercuts until Hay gets another take down and tries to move into side control, Azrin is using his knee well, keeping Hay from getting full side control, Hazrin has managed to get Hay into guard, he is in danger of giving up his back as he is at a strange angle, but he manages to get back into side control and almost immediately into full mount. And tries an inverted triangle, it’s not a good position so he moves to a north south position and again into mount and he starts to land some hard ground and pound. Azrin escapes out the back door but he took some bad shots while down.
Both fighters are standing again and Hay starts to really let loose on Azrin with devastatingly powerful uppercuts and right hands and Azrin is wobbling and  more punches and Hay goes for a knee and as Azrin falls Hay lands on top but Azrin is out. A great fight and sure to be hard to beat as the  fight of the night.
Hay wins in 2 minutes 53 seconds of Round 1

Fight 11: Will “The Kill” Chope Vs Mostaffa “the Lightening” (Kambiz Gym)

Can Will Chope finish his opponent quicker in this fight than the first fight he had, that’s really the only question here. or is it?
The round starts and Will Chope begins with a leg kick, Mostaffa catches Chope with a nice punch and Chope tries to get the underhooks in, they grapple until a very good uppercut from Mostaffa. Mostaffa nearly get’s Chopes legs away from him with some good leg kicks, he is trying to topple the giant with powerful well aimed leg kicks, bringing Chope down to his size, this fight has started at quite a pace. Chope grabs hold of Mostaffa and picks him up and gets the takedown, Mostaffa is trying to get a guillotine while Chope is in half guard. Mostaffa is holding on to that guillotine choke and it looks tight.
Chope gets out and they scramble to their feet, a good knee by Chope and another one, they are not landing cleanly, these guys are grappling hard, the pace is amazing. Chope has Mostaffa against the fence and is trying to pull his legs out, Mostaffa defends for a while but Chope finally gets the take down again. Mostaffa again seems to have a solid guillotine choke on, Chope might be in big trouble here. It’s hard to see whats happening, Mostaffa tries to get his back and it’s looking bad for Chope, this will be a massive shock, Chope manages to get out of the choke during the transition and Chope manages to get to his feet, but he’s cut on his head.
Chope gets a good leg trip and Chope gets on top inmount and postures up, Chope lands some good shots, and he lands some hammer fists, Mostaffa rolls over and Chope takes his back and tries to sink in a rear naked chope, it’s not in properly and Chope is working hard on it and he has the hooks in and although the arms not under the chin Chope is pulling hard. Chope is on top and Mostaffa rolls out again, Chope again takes the chance to slip in the rear naked choke, this one looks much better and Chope applies it well and it’s all over.
Will Chope Wins in 3 minutes 11 seconds of Round 1
Well, I don’t think Will Chope was expecting that and neither was I, Chope had to use every ounce of his experience to get out of a potentially dangerous situation.
I will post the final two fights tomorrow.
