Best of Luck to Will The Kill Chope at UFC Fight Night 39

The big man (as in tall!) will be fighting against a Brazilian in Brazil this weekend at the UFC Fight Night 39 as Will faces Diego Bradao. So he won't get any love from the fans.

Will Chope is a good friend of us here ever since the early days of the MMA News Asia Podcast. And recently we met again as he came to REPS Fitness in Johor to roll before his first UFC fight in Singapore.

He remains one of the hardest working most humble and fun guys we know and he has trained at a good number of the gyms that we talk about here at MMA News Digest making friends wherever he goes.

Best of Luck Will The Kill Chope!

Will Chope / Lanky Madness Fighting at URCC 23 Speaks to World MMA News Digest

Will Chope He's Tall and He Fights A Lot

Watch him at URCC 23 Unrivaled

Will Chope (15-5-0)  vs Andrew Benibe (4-3-0) at URCC 23 Unrivaled
SMX Convention Center, Pasay, Philippines April 27th, 2013.

Will Chope had his first pro fight with almost no training way back in 2010 and quite rightly he lost, serves him right for showing off! He won his next fight and then reality caught up with him and he lost three in a row, Five fights in and he had fought under five different organisations and things did not look too promising with a 1-4 record.

But by now he was training harder and learning some real MMA skills. He fought in Thailand at DARE's first show and got a decision win and since then he has lost just once (to Ev TIng January 2012). At present he is on a ten fight winning streak and stands at 5-0 under the URCC banner. He has made it quite clear he wants the URCC belt and this interim championship belt bout will put him one big step closer.

Will very kindly took a break from being the tallest man in Baguio to speak to us.

Q) We have not spoken in a while so how about telling us a little bit about what you have been doing since your last fight at Friday Night Fight Night 2 when you defeated Tanaphong Khunhankaew via first round Rear-Naked Choke.

A) Yes it' been awhile. Things have been good. After my last fight I went to wife's hometown spent a lot of time with my family actually it was kind of a short break. But then got back to Phuket and kicked up training hard to get ready.

Q)  Andrew Benibe is a URCC regular who recently stepped up the ONE FC where he was beaten in the third round by Honario Banario who as we know recently defeated Eric Kelly. So going almost three full rounds shows that Benibe is versatile. What do you see as his biggest strengths?
A) If you watched that fight he got dominated the entire fight barely even striking back. It was one of the most 1 sided fights I have watched. In saying that Andrew Beninbe can take a beating from a world class guy, so he's durable. But I am here to prove I can beat ONE FC fighters and that is what I want to do and I want to do it fast, so that way I can make a statement.

Q) And how do you feel you two match up?
A) I think I matchup well he is more of a striker as am I but he is physically strong so I don't think I can bully him in the ring. Going to be good.

Q) Obviously this is another step towards that URCC championship belt that you have made it very clear you are after.
A) After this fight I want to reunify the title and fight Sapno for the undisputed FW title.

Q) If you win that event do you think you might get a call from ONE FC?
A) I don't know if I'll get a call I am looking to just keep winning and doing the best I can so I can get noticed by some bigger organizations.

Q) What has it been like re-uniting with Mark Striegl at Baguio?

A) Finishing my fight camp in Baguio is crucial, working with Mark fine tuning my wrestling and strength & conditioning with the altitude is great. Plus get to see all my friends and family here and train with all the new guys at Fight Corps MMA.

Q) It’s been a relatively quiet year for you so far, do you intend to step it up or are you getting lazy in your old age.
A) Yea I really apologize to my fans and supporters out there. I am dissappointed in myself as well. I really wanted to be fighting a whole lot more. Since the New Year I have only fought 2 times, one muay thai and one MMA. I will step it up and still try to push out 20 fights this year. This summer a lot of fights are coming up so will do my best to get on as many shows as possible.

Q) Any sponsors you want to mention?
A) Thanks to Phuket Pro Nutrition, Vicious Circle, and Kombat Mouthguards all companies based in Thailand and have supported me a lot through my training camp and career.
Thanks also to my friends and family for supporting me.

Legend FC 11 Warrior Ev Ting Speaks to World MMA News Digest

Ev Ting / Legend Fighting Championship 11

Ev Ting (5-1) kindly took some time out of his final preparations for his upcoming bout to speak to World MMA News Digest.

Legend Fighting Championship 11 at Chin Woo Stadium, Kuala Lumpur. 27th April 2013

Q) What have been your preparations been for this fight?

A) Preparation wise I've been meeting up to spar with other top Kiwi fighters such as Dan Hooker, Kai France once a week as well as that I have been sharpening up my specific techniques at Auckland MMA with coach Hamish Robertson & Kamikaze Power conditioner Makoto Endo.

Q) What do you know about your opponent? (Choi Yeong Gwang (6-6))

A) Choi is a very game & tough opponent, well rounded & physically strong.

Q) You are part Malaysian although you fight out of NZ, Do you still have family here and are they coming to watch you? (Ting was born in Malaysia of Chinese ancestry)

A) I still consider myself a proud Malaysian Chinese here in NZ although I am long lost with my roots/history and own a Kiwi passport. I never really formally invite family to my competitions as I try to keep business and family separate. I will be in KL for a couple weeks afterwards where I will be catching up with them instead & fit in some training. Rest of my other family is spread out by Sarawak and Singapore.

Q) What will be different from you last fight at Legend? (Rolando Gabriel Dy Navarette at Legend 10. Ting got a Unanimous Decision)

A) My last fight at Legend's with Dy, I was playing it safe to get the W to redeem my performance from my first battle at Legend FC. This fight we can expect a more explosive & hungry me.

Q) What is your long term aim in this sport?

A)
Long term goals in sport is to be happy & content with my career with no regrets.

Q) Who do you most admire in Malaysian MMA and why?

A) Malaysian MMA. I feel the wave of fighters is still somewhat young. But it will have to be Sam Chan or otherwise Will Chope if he can be considered from Malaysian MMA.

Q)  Who is your all time favorite MMA fighter?

A) Fedor

Q) Who are you sponsors?

A) NZMMA, Nutratech. Auckland MMA, BODI Transformation Studio, Faze Authentics, Jackson & Co.

F-3 Championship: “The Kill” defends his belt, Naseri wins Muay Thai belt

F-3 Championship: “The Kill” defends his belt, Naseri wins Muay Thai belt

The Coffee Boys View

Despite how critical The Editor is of F-3 – what with the lack of marketing, shoddy match-making and in the past having cruddy venues – F-3 Championship put on some quality fights and fight fans got to witness some exciting Muay Thai fights, technical boxing bouts, and witness the world’s tallest featherweight put a K-1 vet to sleep.

It was a shame that there weren’t more people at the show – Badminton Stadium Cheras is a great venue for an event like this being that it has a ton of space, it’s air-conditioned, and it’s situated in a part of KL that’s accessible. Hopefully the people behind F-3 start advertising their events way ahead of time.

Will “The Kill” Chope, now 14 – 5, extends his win-streak to nine in a row after putting Alex Lim to sleep in under two minutes in the main event of the first day. As per usual, Chope came out with a significant height and reach advantage and he wasted no time in engaging in the clinch. After scrambling to the ground, Chope secured Lim’s back, slapped on the rear-naked choke and it took only a matter of seconds before Lim was out cold.

Chope, who is a featherweight contended (and recently announced the number 1 contender in the URCC after his domination of Rex de Lara), will likely want to fight for F-3’s featherweight belt in MMA if offered the chance, seeing as he is ironically massively undersized for the welterweight belt. That being said, he has now put away two men in that division, so we’ll wait and see what Chope and F-3 have in store for us.

One the second day’s main event, we saw Amir Naseri face Q Ekkasit in what was an exciting back and forth Muay Thai fight for the 63 kg belt. Early on in the fight, Ekkasit had Naseri tied up against the ropes and Naseri actually flipped over. Thankfully, he wasn’t injured and got back in the ring and the fight resumed. This would go on to happen several times for both fighters – that’s how hard these men fought.

After several rounds of hardcore Muay Thai, Naseri secured the judges’ decision and walked away the new F-3 Muay Thai Champion, with relatively little dispute of the decision.

Also at the event, Nik “The Bloodhound” Harris – who lost his previous fight to Brad “Vanilla Gorilla” Robinson at Ultimate Beatdown X – got back in the win column by defeating Wing Chun specialist MK Chan in the first round by submission (guillotine choke), after MK spent a good deal of time trying to grapple Harris to the ground.

There was also a couple boxing bouts, one that was met with much controversy. James Goyder, combat sports journalist for websites such as MMAMania and Combat Asia – who recently lost in his boxing debut to Juggernaut Fight Club’s “The Slasher” – fought Wan Ridzuan in a rather one-sided affair. Goyder, possessing significant height and reach advantage, was more the aggressor and landed some decent combinations. Ridzuan did, however, land some significant shots in, but it certainly did not look like enough to have beaten Goyder.

As the commentator was about to read out the judges decision, the referee had been expecting Goyder to get the nod and already lifted his hand up. However, Ridzuan was announced the winner via split-decision. Afterwards upon inspection of the official scorecards, it was revealed that there had been a miscalculation (take that with a grain of salt), and that it was actually a draw. F-3 have officially ruled the bout a draw between Goyder and Ridzuan.
It was a fun weekend of fights, and we here at Rear Naked News (well The Coffee Boy) hope they really stick around for a long time (but only if they start marketing themselves better, and fix some things here and there such as match-making and in-venue stuff like having a concession stand). Posted below are the full results from both days:

Mark Striegl ~ A Beautiful Future Awaits

Mark Striegl: “A win over Sarmiento definitely puts me up there…”

(article by the Coffee Boy)

Come November 17th, Mark Striegl has a big fight in front of him with title implications behind it, but it’s an uphill battle against the MMA veteran and current PXC Lightweight Champion Harris Sarmiento.

“A win over Sarmiento definitely puts me in line up there for a title shot…I think,” Striegl says. He also adds that he hopes a win over Sarmiento “…will get me an Andok's sponsorship.” (For those of you lost, much like I was, Andok's is a chain of roasted chicken restaurants in the Philippines).

Currently undefeated, his record stands at 11 – 0, nine coming by way of submission. He has beaten the likes of Alcer Lozada, Robert Wusstig, and current ONE FC Korean superstar Bae Young Kwon. Finally signing down exclusively with competitive MMA promotion PXC, a lot of talk was that he’d be close to a title shot.

“…a belt would certainly be nice. Will Chope (Team Buffet teammate) and I were kind of racing to see who would get to a belt first,” Striegl muses, “…guess I lost that one.”

One wonders which division he’d be competing at competitively for a championship, and a lot of people believe that a drop to the bantamweight division would be best for him. “Dropping to 135 makes some sense, but I haven’t lost at 145,” he says, “…and the idea of dieting and cutting weight isn’t very pleasant.”

In any case, before he even considers a drop to 135 lbs or a title shot, he has Harris Sarmiento standing in front of him in a couple weeks and that task is something that could make or break this Fil-Am fighter. In preparation for this fight, he has brought in AJ “Pyro” Lias to join him in Baguio where he trains with Fight Corps MMA.

When asked about his training regiment and game-plan, he seemed iffy about giving away too many details. “I typically wake up at 4 am to run… After that I eat breakfast and proceed to chase horses and livestock. Sometimes chickens…like Rocky,” he laughs. “Just kidding…you know I can’t tell you all my ninja secret training methods.

“We have a solid team at Fight Corps MMA and I will be well-prepared for Harris.”

It was just a few short years ago that Mark “Mugen” Striegl got into mixed martial arts. He explained that it was his background in wrestling that made him interested in combat sports. “I got into MMA because I grew up watching PRIDE FC in Japan and thought they were amazing.

“Coming from a wrestling background, I was always interested in combat sports and after high school I had to give MMA a try.”

When asked who his biggest inspiration was in MMA, he had to be all cheesy and said “My family and friends.” (enter waterworks)

“I look up to Fedor and Genki Sudo a lot,” after finally caving in, “Fedor did the unheard of in Pride, and Genki Sudo was the ultimate showman. He was fun to watch, had a tricky style of fighting, and had epic entrances.”

Mark “Mugen” Striegl faces Harris Sarmiento on the 17th of November at PXC 34, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines.
