ONE FC return to Kuala Lumpur

ONE FC: Return of Warriors

Putra Indoor Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Feb 2nd, 2013

ONE FC's latest announcement for the show in Kuala Lumpur - Return of the Warriors promises much excitement especially for fans of local fighters.

Also at this bout was an announcement about TuneTalk sponsorship of the event, you can read our exclusive interview with TuneTalks CEO Jason Lo HERE

The big bout is between URCC Champions - Lightweight champion Honorio Banario and fellow Philippine (although Malaysian based) ex URCC Featherweight Champion Eric Kelly. This will be for the ONE FC Featherweight Championship belt.

It seems strange that ONE FC would have a fight between two of the Philippines most popular fighters in Malaysia, surely a chance missed for a future ONE FC in Manila event. But the Philippines loss is our gain.

Kelly has just recovered from a tough bout at the recent celebration of ten years of the URCC: URCC 22 Dekada. In this bout Kelly fought a very tough Brad Terrey and was taken to a deciding third round by which time Kelly was fighting with one eye completely closed, somehow he managed to pull off and armbar showing once again why he is one of the best fighters in Asia, his record still stands at a perfect 9-0.

Barario rocks a 7-1 record and sits at 1-1 in ONE FC with a loss (ONE FC 2 Feb 2012) to Bae Young Kwon as his only loss in his career. Kelly beat Kwon at ONE FC 4. Banario however has a soilid record and is a submission specialist. This should lead to an explosive match-up.

Also announced was the bout between big Malaysian favorite Peter Davis who will be fighting the Indonesian Leo Krishna a man who I am sure will be expecting a massive barrage of boos as he walks to the cage as the Malaysian crowd will be right behind Davis.

Gianni Subba burst onto the MMA scene at ONE FC 6 when he defeated Singapores Bruce Loh in just 33 seconds, now he faces  Saiful Merican is an established Mauy Thai fighter.

There is also to be a four man 145lbs tournament featuring four Malaysian warriors.

Melvin Yeoh will make his debut against Raymond Tiew, this will be an interesting fight as Yeoh is a very well respected MMA coach who has already defeated Tiew back in September 2011 at the Malayisan Fighting Championship 2.  Since then Yeoh has gone 4-1, but his step up into the ONE FC cage whilst long deserved will be a major step up. He may have beaten Tiew once, but, Tiew has gone 3-1 since then as well, his only loss being on his ONE FC debut at ONE FC 2.

The winner of that fight will face the winner of:

AJ Vaa vs Jian Kai Chee. Vaa is a well known and respected MMA coach from Malaysian Borneo who will be looking to put on a good show after suffering a first round loss to Mitch Chilson at ONE FC 4. He has been training hard and also has been part of fast rising PXC fighter Mark Striegl (12-0) coaching team, so expect to see a different AJ Vaa facing Chee. Chee has fought a high level of opponents including losses to Ole Laursen, Arnaud lePont and Eddie Ng. All of his wins come at the Malaysian Fighting Championship, it will be important for him to prove that he can actually step up and compete at a higher level. These two are well matched.

That's all that is known of the Fight Card for now, as with all these things expect changes and additions over the coming weeks, we will try to keep you up to date.

Tunetalk's CEO - Jason Lo Exclusive Interview

Jason Lo CEO of Tunetalk Gives Rear Naked News An Exclusive Interview

He talks about Tunetalks proposed involvement in Malaysian MMA ~ Sponsoring Eric Kelly, ONE FC a new Malaysian Event and much more.

During this interview we try to find out exactly what is and isn't true about Tunetalk's involvement in Malaysian MMA for 2013 and hopefully beyond.

Here's what Jason kindly told us:

Tune Talk will be presenting OneFC in Kuala Lumpur this year. The details of which will be revealed at a press conference this thursday.

We will also be launching our own Amateur MMA event called MIMMA. (Malaysian Invasion Mixed Martiall Arts) This is a tournament which will span about 6 months from Jan onwards and involve any or all gyms in Malaysia who will be able to put local Malaysian fighters forward.

There will be a trials round in KL, followed by a ladder, quarters, semis and a main event Final which will feature 7 weight category Malaysian Invasion Champions, as well as 3 superfights between top Malaysian MMA fighters. There will also be prize money at each round. We'll have a press conference for this in early Jan to explain more but we're mega excited about it.

We perceive that MMA is building in Malaysia and the community is growing larger as a result. We're really into building communities, as we have with music and QPR related events and MMA is the next one we plan to rock! This in turn will keep our brand young, edgy, on our toes and hopefully cooler than all the other prepaid telcos out there who rip off their customers like no tomorrow!
I asked Jason how long Tunetalk would be in involved in MMA in Malaysia and his answer was great news for the sport.
We are in everything for the long term. To grow MMA and to grow with MMA in Malaysia and possibly the region.
How do you see Tunetalks image when it is involved in sponsoring MMA in Malaysia where the Malaysian TV censors often censor MMA shows. Is this a concern or just a fact of life in Malaysia?
If the sport falls flat on it's face in appeal or gets banned: these are the only possible end dates we can foresee. However, we did plenty of research, connected with the people in the sport to decide that's unlikely to happen. So we hope to be a big part of Malaysian MMA for the future.

Unless of course, no one remotely connected with the sport buys our simcards or uses our services. Then, I may have trouble justifying our investment to the board.

Is Tunetalk also considering sponsoring individual fighters and if so would they be Malaysian based foreigners or would you only consider Malaysian born fighters?
Yes we are and we are in discussions with some MMA professionals who are Malaysians. We are also talking to Eric Kelly as he is one hell of a fierce fighter.

What brought Tunetalk to the thought that MMA in Malaysia would be a great marketing opportunity?
Aside from a friend of mine Dax, introducing me to some local key people in the sport, I'm also a fan of MMA and watch UFC. Even went to UFC 67 for Anderson Silva vs Lutter, watched Cro Cop, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Roger Huerta (who I also watched in OneFC 4 endure a soccer kick which knocked him out against ZoroMoreira)

I was so impressed with what OneFC was doing that we contacted Victor and got moving. We then started to hear about LegendFC and RoadFC and realized the sport is at a turning point in the region with more visibility in the media.

Will Tunetalk also consider sponsoring smaller regional MMA events in Malaysia such as Johor's 'Ultimate Beatdown' or Muayfits (KL) "Malaysian Fighting Championship"?
We are open to looking at anything. We never close doors. We prefer to open them.

Does Tunetalk have specific marketing expectations (targets/metrics) that it aims to achieve with this sponsorship?
Lots of subscribers!!

What do you see as the biggest weakness in present day Malaysian MMA?
Probably the fact that there is no one real unifying body for the sport. Also that perception is very weak. Not many people understand MMA in Malaysia. Ironic, given the fact that we are a melting pot of martial arts in the region. Not quite Thailand or Japan ok, but we should have more tournaments by now.

And there's no dedicated media. But it's coming slowly as more money drifts into the sport.
This is like watching the gladiators of old. All you need is a cage or a ring, a couple of good fighters and a great story. Huge opportunity is out there and I think that's our biggest strength. All the pieces are around us.

Thank you very much Jason.
----------------------------

So, there you have it a whole bucketful of positives for MMA in Malaysia.

Take this simple fact on board: By Tunetalk getting involved with MMA in Malaysia they will help to open the market to wider coverage and bigger better events. They will bring something desperately needed in Malaysia as their professional Marketing team knows how to build a brand and access the media.

Tunetalk are taking a brave and exciting step and hopefully that should enable the marketing people at other major Malaysian based companies to feel safe enough to get on board with their marketing dollars.

After all regardless of what has up to this point been the case in Malaysia, MMA is the world fastest growing sport and anybody that witnessed all the happenings in Malaysian MMA in 2012 must be positive that things are changing and growing and that NOW is the time for Malaysian MMA to really build on all the recent ground work.

After all this year we can look forward to shows in KL by two of Asia's biggest MMA organisations ONE FC will have their second show and Legend FC will have their first. Both of these shows of course will have plenty of Internet coverage and gossip and more importantly International TV coverage.

The MIMMA which Jason mentions above sounds like it will make a big splash in Malaysia this year and the press conference for that is due later this month. It could totally grab the full spectrum of Malaysia's press and really make a big noise. Best of all it also sounds as though it will bring a real professional outfit into what up until now has been a very amateur field.

Marketing in Malaysian MMA has been a disaster, frankly a joke and with Tunetalk on board I cannot see that being tolerated, this is big business and with it will come big business requirements, I look forward to seeing how others respond to seeing how marketing should be done.

Ten Glorious Years - URCC 22 Dekada

Colt 45 URCC 22  Dekada

Universal Reality Combat Championship

Asia's Longest Running And One Of It's Most Respected MMA Organisations Celebrates 10 Years in Style

There are many reasons we here at Rear Naked News love the URCC.
Not the least is the fact that they started the whole dam MMA thing ten years ago when many people in Asia had no idea what was going on.

They built a great following and more importantly they build a great group of fighters.

The Philippine MMA events play to probably the most knowledgable MMA fans in Asia, MMA is on TV everyday somewhere in the Philippines, they love the sport.

Because of that love they produce some real kick ass fighters, Team Lakey is probably the most successful MMA gym in Asia in real terms.

But of course there are many other MMA gyms around the Philippines providing competition and that is why the Philippines is such a hot bed of quality young fighters.

Ten years ago when Alvin Aquilar started the URCC I am sure he had no idea of the influence they would have over Asian MMA.

Whilst newer organisations for the main part are using Cages the URCC are very much traditionalists and like the once big Japanese organisations who they have outlasted they still fight in a Ring. Personally, I have no preference I am much more concerned about the quality of the bouts.

The quality of the bouts depends on matchmaking and the URCC have probably Asia's best matchmaker in Will Carlos.
These lead to very exciting events and of course being in the MMA crazy Philippines the crowds pour into these events.

And to celebrate ten years as one of Asia's best MMA organisations the URCC present  the Colt 45 URCC 22 - Dekada.

Some of the top names in Asian MMA will be fighting including Eric "The Natural" Kelly and Eduard Folayang.

At the SM Arena on December 1st starting at 8:00pm.

Here's the fight card:

Flyweight:

Janel Lanusa  vs Ramie Crisostomo (0-1-0)

Roy Doliguez (2-0-0)  vs Dennis Salazar (2-3-0)

Pinweight:

Spartan Sumogat vs Alvin Ramirez (5-5-0)

Featherweight:

Reydon Romero (4-3-0) vs Sulpiano Laurio Jr. (1-1-1)

Catchweight:

Ray Estrada (0-1-0) vs Coloy Baduria (7-4-1)

Middleweight:

Froilan Sarenas (3-1-0) vs Rodrigo Praxedes (1-1-0)

Bantamweight:

Jessi Raffols vs Keiff Mangusan (3-1-0)

Reysaldo Transmonte (2-2-0) vs Hideo Morikawa (4-1-0)

Featherweight:

Eric Kelly (8-0-0) vs Brad Terry (0-1-0)

Superfight:

Lowens Tynanes (1-0-0) vs Eduard Folayang (12-2-0)

If you are outside of the Philippines you can watch a live stream of this event at URCCMMA.COM

Eric Kelly Is He Next For The UFC?

Eric "The Natural" Kelly Another Bright Philippine Prospect

We have it on good authority that during the run-up to UFC Macao, Eric Kelly was also in Macao and he was training three times a day at a top BJJ gym and occasionally getting to roll with with UFC fighters. All this preparation is I am sure going to serve "The Natural" well as he continues on the trail that he hopes will lead him to the UFC, much like fellow Philippine warrior Jon Tuck who made is UFC debut this past week.

Of course Kelly's next step is back at the URCC where it all began for him, as he will tackle Brad Terry as the URCC celebrate ten years and cement their status as Asia's oldest MMA organisation.
December 1st, Mall of Asia Arena, Manila.

Also with Kelly in Macao was Jazor "Razor" Ablasi another Philippine prospect.

We hear that any day now Eric will be heading to Beijing to train with Vince Sabrano at Black Tiger Fight Club.

This looks very much like Eric Kelly is in serious training and we are very pleased to hear that news.

We have always considered The Natural to be one of the most exciting prospects in Asia and this looks like the beginning of a new exciting chapter in his story.

ONE FC 6: Rise of Kings

ONE FC 6: Rise of Kings

Two title shots going down in Singapore

Last weekend we saw Eric Kelly smash a very game Jens Pulver at ONE FC 5, and it earned him his title shot with the budding promotion. Undefeated in his professional mixed martial arts career, Kelly has beaten MMA prospects Mitch Chilson and Bae Young Kwon, and is the reigning URCC featherweight champion. His TKO victory over the former UFC Lightweight Champion extends his record to 8 – 0.

The man he’ll be facing is Honorio Banario. He is the reigning URCC lightweight champion, and has beaten Alcer Lozada and Patrick Manicad, amongst others. Last weekend, his win over Andrew Benibe was apparently enough to get a title shot. His win over Benibe extends his record to 7 – 1, and he is currently 1 – 1 with ONE FC.
The matchup is a little strange, as Eric Kelly is 3 – 0 with ONE FC, while Banario has one win and one loss with the promotion. A title fight for Kelly against Tatsuya Kawajiri would have probably gone over a little bit better with the fans, however, they will have to settle for this matchup for now.

The other title fight going down will be Zorobabel Moreira against Ole Laursen, as was confirmed on Twitter by Victor Cui (although the Tweet was removed several hours later).

Moreira is 7 – 1 with ONE FC, putting on stellar performances beating Andy Wang, Felipe Enomoto, and Roger Huerta in dominant fashion. Clearly one of the best prospects under the ONE FC lightweight roster, it’s no surprise he was given this opportunity.

His opponent will be none other than Ole Laursen. Despite reports that Laursen had cut ties with the promotion, he’ll be facing Moreira for the title, stepping in for Eduard Folayang (who was originally announced to fight for the title). Laursen is 6 – 3, having beaten Eduard Folayang, Jian Kai Chee and Nick LeConte, to name a few.

One wonders what might happen after Shinya Aoki makes his debut with the promotion, facing top French fighter Arnaud Lepont. If Aoki is victorious, he would be a clear no. 1 contender in that division, but seeing as Moreira is a training partner of his at top Asian MMA gym Evolve, who knows what is going to happen.

Make sure to catch ONE FC 6: Rise of Kings going down in Singapore on the 6th of October.

Quick Thoughts: Post-ONE FC Pride of a Nation ~ From The Coffee Boy

Quick Thoughts: Post-ONE FC Pride of a Nation ~ From The Coffee Boy

Post-ONE FC Pride of a Nation ~ From The Coffee Boy

ONE FC 5 was, as expected, action-packed. We saw Bibiano Fernandes put on a mixed martial arts clinic against Gustavo Falciroli, Eric Kelly make a name for himself against the very game Jens Pulver, and we saw the redemption of Phil Baroni as he smashed Rodrigo Ribeiro. But let’s touch on some of the more “sensitive” issues of the night.

Shannon “One Shin” Wiratchai looked in trouble as Mitch “The Dragon” Chilson was able to easily dominate the first round by putting him on his back, and land some heavy punches and elbows. The second round took an unexpected turn as “One Shin” started landing some heavy punches and kicks.
Here’s where it gets controversial: Chilson tried taking him down again, but Wiratchai was able to stuff it. He threw a big punch, and Chilson was not only rocked, but dropped. As he started getting up, and still had one hand on the ground, Wiratchai threw a big kick to the head, and the ref jumped in.

Now, we all know ONE FC mixes Pride rules with the Unified rules. Commentator Jason Chambers mentioned that the referee had not signaled the “open attack”, yet Wiratchai threw that kick anyways.

It’s a little confusing at times, for me at least, to know just when you can throw a kick like that.

However, the referee didn’t do anything about it, saw that Chilson was in trouble, and stepped in. So maybe that kick was legal?

The bigger issue with that fight was whether or not the stoppage was premature. Chilson was dropped, tried getting up, and was hit with a devastating kick, so the referee decided to stop the fight, in favor of Wiratchai. I have seen far worse stoppages, and while there may be some truth that Chilson could have gone on, the referee did what he had to do. In fact, the referee, if you watch the fight again, was clearly ready to pounce as soon as Chilson was dropped with that devastating punch.

Verdict: Fair stoppage. Chilson looked hurt, and was dropped (which many people crying “bad stoppage” seem to forget), so the ref did what he thought was right. There is a good chance a rematch could happen, but I think it would be best for both men to go on and fight other talent in that division.

The other big story of the night was Andrei Arlovski vs Tim Sylvia. The first round went alright for both men, although there was some sluggishness in the clinch. The second round saw Arvloski coming out throwing hard punches, at one point knocking Sylvia’s mouthpiece about. Sylvia was dropped with a couple punches, and Arlovski wasted no time and threw two soccer kicks, the second one clearly having more “umph” in it. But what happened?

It looked as if the fight was over, and most people watching were either confused or thought that Arlovski had won the fight. As it turns out, referee Yuji Shimada was signaling a time-out. What happened was that Shimada had not signaled “open attack”, which by ONE FC rules, allows a fighter to throw a soccer kick. Sylvia was given some time to recover, and Arlovski was handed a yellow card. Sylvia told the referee that he couldn’t see properly, so the bout was declared a no-contest.

In no time, people took to Twitter to bash the ONE FC “open attack” rule. In a nutshell, most people argued that there is not much time for a fighter to hear the “open attack” signal before he throws a kick. Many believe that fighters should be allowed to throw it when they want, much like the days of Pride, or that the soccer kick should be banned altogether.

This isn’t the first time there was controversy surrounding the soccer kick. At ONE FC 4, Zorobabel Moreira threw a devastating soccer kick to downed opponent Roger Huerta. Huerta was clearly out of it, on all fours, when Moreira looked up for a signal to throw a soccer kick. It knocked Huerta out cold. The two problems we saw with it was that some sitting near the cage didn’t hear “open attack”, but heard variations of “no kick” to “low kick”. According to MMAFighting.com, Moreira says that Yuji Shimada was yelling “low kick” to him, so he threw the kick. If that was the case…well, you see the problem with that? It makes absolutely no sense for a referee to tell a fighter what strike to throw.

The other problem with the kick was that Huerta was clearly out of it, and in fact the soccer kick looked very unnecessary. On top of that, if that position Huerta was in was “open-attack”-worthy, fighters are being put in dangerous positions as we all know how destructive a soccer kick can be.

Verdict: ONE FC needs to reexamine their rule-set. I’m not in a position to say whether or not soccer kicks should be allowed, but the rules need to be more clearly defined. Clearly, “open attack” being yelled by a referee (or even “low kick”) isn’t working out every time for them.

The Philippine Fans Do ONE FC Proud

The Fighters Put On A Great Show

The TV coverage started off showing us the fighters getting off of the coaches and walking into the venue and even at this stage Tim Sylvia looked wooden, I hope he looks better in the fight.

When then had the fighters introduced to the crowds by the horrible shrill voiced Lenne  Hardt an Asian MMA legend whose appeal I will never understand.

What I could see of the crowd I have to say it looks like the Philippine fans had come out in force, the Philippines is truly the hotbed of Asian MMA,

Under Card

First bout was:

Andrew Benibe vs Honario Bonario

Two Philippine Featherweight Contenders, the young gun Bonario and the old stager Benibe.

Round 1:
Good early leg kick from Bonario (HB) and his first take down comes at 1:15 in but Benibe (AB) is soon up. Again HB takes him down Benibe is being totally outclassed and this fight is already looking like an easy win for HB. For the rest of the round he totally outclasses AB without looking like he would stop him.

Round 2:
Followed a similar journey at no stage did it look like Benibe could put up any sort of challenge. Frankly it looks like a bad match up or a nice easy match up for what is a fighter being groomed for a title shot.

Round 3:
Eventually Benibe gets tired of being a punch bag and with about a minute to go after a flurry of punches and kicks seems to give up the struggle and the ref steps in to stop it although the official result is a Knockout which is puzzling surely it was a TKO?

Bout 2:

 Mitch Chilson vs Shannon Waratchai

The way the commentators were talking about Chilson and Evolve all the way to the cage, talking of his chance at a title fight (yes he is just 1 and 1 in ONE FC!) but the way they talked Shannon Waratchai wasn’t in this bout.

Round 1:
Chilson takes Waratchai down fairly easily and it’s all one way traffic for Chilson he looks to be in no danger.
Between the rounds, I have to say that Chilson is looking tired and the corner did seem concerned which was amazing when he had been in such control.

Round 2:
Chilson really does look tired that’s not championship material.
And even less so when he attacks Waratchai who looks amazingly confident for a fighter who lost the first round so easily. Well maybe he was right Chilson waded in swinging and caught a counter punch from Waratchai which landed him on his ass and follow-up kick from Waratchai and the ref stepped in and it was all over. Fist big shock of the night. Well done to Shannon Waratchai.

Bout 3:

Phil Baroni vs Rodrigo Ribeiro

Baroni came out caught Ribeiro with a straight punch and from then on it was all Baroni who battered a shocked Ribeiro until the ref stepped in with less than a minute gone. A great win and surely a shock for the Evolve team. Two losses in two fights.

 Bout 4:

 Nicholas Mann vs Gregor Gracie

Gracie has not impressed at all in his two ONE FC fights and Mann a URCC champion is going to be a big test or is he?

Round 1:
As it turned out not so much as after a few exchanges it was on the ground with Gracie on top and then it was all over as Gracie get an arm bar – 1:45 of the first round.

Main Event:

Kevin Belingon vs Soo Chul Kim

Bout 5:

Big crowd favourite Belingon came into the cage to massive cheers from the Philippine crowd.

Round 1:

Kim seemed to be un-phased by the whole event and was at Bellingon from the off.
He soon has Belingon on his back and bullied him for the whole round.

Round 2:

Much the same except for a couple of kicks from Bellingon including an up kick that did nothing good for Kims nose and saw the ref stop the fight so that the blood could be wiped away before resuming it on the ground with Kim on top.

Round 3:

Saw Belingon taking control and he spent the best part of the round on top of Kim which was not much of a plan as he really needed to impress the judges to win this fight.

Unanimous Decision win to Kim and deservedly so.

Bout 6.

Jung Kwan Cha vs Igor Gracie

You would not know it listening to the commentators but Cha wins a lot of his fights by Submission (and also loses many that way).
Gracie of course given his breeding will be a BJJ expert.

Round 1:

A very good and even round but Gracie had to be the more aggressive and successful.

 Round 2:

Much the same but with Cha taking the round especially as he twice got Gracie in a Cruicfix and ruled the round.

Round 3:

Cha looking confident moved forward early and soon caught Gracie with a great punch and he went down, Cha pounced and in a modified side mount put a beating on Gracie who turtled up quickly until the ref stepped in. A great win.

Bout 8.

Tony Bonello vs Rolles Gracie

Bonello has a great record but has not been in the cage for a couple of years will it show or is he still fresh?
Gracie of course had the misfortune to fight Bob Tap Sapp and therefore had no chance to show us how good he was.

Round 1:

Bonello was on his back within a minute and then for the next four minutes we watched Rolles hold him down and slowly try to move him into a position that he could submit him from.
Bonello had a cut eye and a very puffy face so he obviously took quite a beating out of site of the camera underneath Rolles.

Round 2:

Much the same until  Gracie slips on a Rear naked Choke about 2 minutes in and it was all over, Frankly a mismatch and a boring fight. I can understand the reason for the bout on paper but Bonello really did not look like he was up to much certainly not given his recent lack of activity.

Bout 9:

Eric Kelly vs Jens Pulver

A very much anticipated fight, Eric Kelly the Philippine fighter against the ex UFC champion and old guard Jens Pulver.
Both men are real warriors who fight to improve their lives.

Round 1.

A great first round Kelly caught Pulver early and rocked him but he soon ended up on the floor under Pulver after a slip, he soon reversed Pulver and they stood up again, a great start. Kelly then got caught with a few good punches from Pulver and looked to be on wobbly legs. Kelly tried a one arm throw but ended up underneath Pulver and in trouble.  A great first round and I think Pulver took it.

Round 2:

Kelly came out and immediately caught Pulver with some good punches and they seemed to be having an effect. Pulver looked shaken and Kelly just kept coming, a kick sent him to the ground, Kelly was on him took his back and lay some punchs in until the ref stopped it.
A great fight from both fighters,  This was Kelly’s toughest challenge and he came through with flying colours. Pulver was gracious and said he will step down to 135 and we also heard that Eric Kelly will face Honarion Bonario for the 145 title on October 6th in Singapore. Should be a great event.

Bout 10.

Tim Sylvia vs Andre Arlovski

The fourth time these old dinosaurs meet and the least interesting fight to me. I would rather have seen three more local bouts in its place for up and coming Philippine fighters. But hey we’ll take it.
It’s the un-fit looking Sylvia against the glass chinned Arlovski who will prevail.

Round 1:

Arlovski is much the faster but Sylvia has the advantage in durability of chin.
Sylvia gets Arlovski against the cage and holds him, on the occasions when he breaks free Arlovski looks OK, but every time Sylvia lands Arlovski looks vulnerable.
I think Sylvia wons the round but it was a dull round.

Round 2:

I had no interest in this fight when it was announced and I have even less interest now. They are both well beyond their sell by dates and bring nothing to this show. It’s fairly even and terribly boring. Bring back Eric Kelly and Jens Pulver.
Arlovski downed Sylvia with a good punch and then kicked him and that I thought was that but apparently the ref had not called that he was able to kick. And the ref called a time out instead it’s a mess, this whole kick, no kick thing needs to be sorted out in ONE FC, it just leads to controversy. And with Sylvia refusing to continue it’s a complete fuck-up and the crowd are pissed. It’s a No Contest.
And Jason Chambers NOBODY wants to see that shite fight again thank you.

Bout 11:

And back to a proper fight, this could take the roof off of the building if Folayang wins.

Eduard Folayang vs Felipe Enomoto

Round 1.

A quiet first round but Folayang did the most effective work. Enomoto seems unwilling to really engage.

Round 2.

Folayang took control in this round he was much more powerful with his punches and seemed to have no real problem with Enomoto’s height advantage. His speeed was a real advantage he would catch Enomoto in a flurry of punches and just keep pushing forward. Enomoto just kept walking forward but it was not working for him. With 30 seconds left Folayang punches Enomoto to the ground and then pounds him until the bell.

Round 3.

Enomoto puts on a much better display in this round and probably takes this round but it’s too little too late I am sure.

The judges announcement confirms Eduard Folayang via Unanimous Decision.

Bout 12. The Main Event

Gustavo Falciroli vs Bibiando Fernandes

Round 1.

Fernandes allegedly turned down UFC to join ONE FC a baffling decision for a sports man, not fighting in the biggest and best organisation. But maybe Fernandes knows that were he to head to America he would be a very small cog in a big wheel. At ONE FC he should be able to shine as one of it’s brightest lights.
Fernandes is soon on top of a grounded Falciroli and using elbows to Falcirolis horrible blue hair. They return to their feet where Fernandes looks much the more able fighter and then back on the ground with Fernandes again in control even at this early stage it’s hard top see Fernands losing this fight. A future ONE FC champion?  For sure. He easily contolled the first round.

Round 2.

Again Fernandes is totally in control of Falciroli and at no stage does he look to be in any danger of losing position. Sadly Fernandes is so much better than Falciroli that this is not much of a fight for the crowd it’s very technical but not full of exciting action. Two rounds down and Falciroli is not in this fight at all.

Round 3.

Attempted rear nacked choke, attempted arm bar all with in thirty seconds of the start of the round for Fernandes. Then Fernandes slows down and the rest of the round is much better for falciroli but not enough to cause Fernandes any problems.
Fernandes wins by Unanimous Decision

Summary

So in summary a very successful event from ONE FC. The Philippines is the perfect place for this show as unlike Indonesia or Malaysia MMA is already an established and very popular sport. And the Philippine people came out and made a great atmosphere.
Fight of the Night? I Think Kelly vs Pulver, A real pair of warriors who can to throw down.
Non Event of the Night? Arlovski vs Sylvia – No more please
The fights were interesting and there were a few shocks. ONE FC really did put on a good show. Now how about dropping that soccer kick, it’s either allowed or it’s not, lets take away the onus on the ref to call it.
And please ONE FC lets call it ONE FC Championship Belts not World Championship Belts, please.

ONE FC Destiny of Warriors and Muayfit and Malaysia Win Big

While most of the talk will be of Zorobabel Moreira’s soccer kick to the head that knocked out El Matador, Muayfit quietly went about their business at ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors.

The Malaysian camp has often come under criticism for not being on par with their Singaporean and Thai counterparts but the stats don’t lie. Muayfit had three fights last night after “Pretty Boy” Allamurad’s fight was cancelled due to a medical issue. Final score for Muayfit: 3 fights, 3 wins.

Peter Davis quick destruction of Juggernaut’s “The Hulk” Kim Hock meant that the only thing Quek ‘smashed’ was his own jaw. Eric Kelly found life much tougher against Bae Young Kwon of Team Posse but managed to pull off a unanimous decision win. The win means that Kelly remains undefeated with a 7-0 record.

Arnaud Lepont extended his win streak to six after coming from behind to beat Evolve’s Brian Choi. The Game tried to finish the fight early but found Choi’s wrestling a much more difficult proposition than expected. Lepont though would not be denied his win and went on a rampage in the third, finishing the fight with a rear naked choke.

Lepont’s record now stands at 9-1. The Frenchman called out Shinya Aoki in the post fight interview but I personally found his failure to avoid profanity the best part of the interview and that’s really what makes The Game one of the best entertainers ONE FC has on their roster (did you see his walk in?). Is he ready for Aoki? That’s for Victor Cui to decide.

It was also a good night for Malaysian fighters. Borneo Tribal Squad’s AJ Lias Mansor wasn’t able to get past Evolve’s Mitch Chilson but Peter Davis was just one of two Malaysians to pick up big wins last night. Phuket Top Team’s Adam Kayoom (read his pre-fight interview with The Sandman here) pick up the win of his career after beating MMA royalty in his unanimous decision win over Gregor Gracie (Renzo Gracie Academy).

The biggest star of the night though appeared to be Marcos Escobar (pre-fight interview with The Sandman here). The Malaysian-based BJJ black belt found himself with even more cheers than the Malaysians. Not only did he walk out holding a Malaysian flag, everyone from Leverage Combat Academy including the tea lady must have been there in support of him. And he didn’t disappoint, beating Praxedes (Phuket Top Team) in both stand up and ground game. He eventually forced Praxedes to tap at 1min 55secs of round 3.

There weren’t that many major injuries in the fight besides Kim Hock (fractured jaw) and Roger Huerta (knocked out). The Sandman, on behalf on MMANewsAsia, would like to wish Kim Hock, Roger and also Allamurad Karayev all the best in their recovery.

ONE FC Destiny of Warriors Delivers in Kuala Lumpur

(Kuala Lumpur 5:00am Sunday-It’s been a long exciting night!)

OK this is the big one Malaysia has never seen an MMA event of anything approaching of this size.
A big crowd is fully expected to create one heck of a buzz, I mean one heck of a buzz! The Stadium Negara has been transformed into a stadium fit for the fastest growing sport in the world.

The crowd mingling outside were looking expectant already wearing shirts showing the latest MMA labels or the MMA Gym or indeed MMA fighter they were supporting.

We got there early it was not due to kick off until 8:00pm and already a fair-sized crowd was mingling around outside, even some of the fighters were there still chatting to friends and fans.

Once we got inside the full-scale of the show became clear. It’s a nice stadium certainly on a par with the Singapore stadium that ONE FC inhabits when on home ground.

Today would be a big test, how would the Malaysian crowd respond to this event, after all to Malaysia this really is the dawning of s new sport. Before today’s show a few worthy local gyms had run smaller shows laying valuable ground work for the event to come tonight, but, this was the big one.

Sport has a great habit of bringing people together with its drama and excitement and tonight an  expected 8000 plus people are going to be brought together to cheer on their fellow countrymen and witness some of the many international fighters who train in Malaysia plus of course some top quality international fighters including an amazing six fighters from the home of MMA, Brazil.

This is a show that probably less than two years ago no MMA fan in Malaysia would have even dreamed of seeing happen in their own country and yet amazingly here it was and it was real.

The ONE FC machine has become increasingly slick from event to event and this was looking smooth from the entry.

Their were sponsors stalls outside and plenty of people to visit them and outside it was approaching evening on a delightfully sunny KL day. It was nice to enter the stadium to access cooler air.

Soon though that air would be charged as warriors entered the cage to do battle.

First order of the day was to meet the fighters they were introduced one and at time and stood circling the cage, an impressive site.

Sadly the fight between Alamurad Kurayev and Roldan Sangcha-an was cancelled due to medical reasons. A real shame Alamurad deserves a stage of this size especially a he trains in KL with the Muayfit Team and this would have been like his home town, we look forward to seeing him in a future ONE FC event.

Bout 1:
Queck Kim Hock – Peter Davis

It’s the Singaporean youngster vs the more experienced Malaysian.
It’s nice to see that ONE FC is now allowing the fighters from all teams to approach the cage with a full size entourage as it makes a much for fun spectacle for the entrance.
But of course the real action happens in the cage.

Round 1:
This was a different Pete Davis to the one I have seen fight at MFC and ONE FC from the start he was more composed and aggressive and a spinning back kick early in the round unsettled Hock and Davis then started an onslaught of knees and punches before the referee stepped in to save Hock from serious beating, as it was it looked like he might have lost the odd tooth (or three)!

Bout 2:
Marcos Escobar – Rodrigo Praxedes

Escobar a Brazilian based in Kuala Lumpur and at 36 starting his MMA career at a late stage.
Praxedes a fellow Brazilian is not much more experienced on the MMA stage. But don’t be fooled both these guys are top quality black belt BBJ practitioners.

Round 1.
These two went straight for it for the first 30 seconds or so exchanging punches and kicks before Praxedes took it to the floor. The main damage at this stage though was probably from the Elbows of Escobar from the ground which unsettled Praxedes. When they returned to their feet Praxedes caught Escobar with a kick on the way up. They soon circled again and Escobar went for a take down which he achieved easily enough and although Praxede looked less mobile he soon got up but was almost immediately taken down again and as Escobar took control for the rest of the round, unleashing knees and ground and pound till the rounds end.

Round 2.
Escobar looked the fresher of the two men, Praxedes actually looked gassed. Escobar was looking in control although their was a stoppage as Escobar kicked Praxedes in the groin.
When they resumed Escobar immediately took control. Then with two minutes of the round left they exchanged punches and Escobar went down with Praxedes following for a short while he had control but then they stood up again and Escobar agin took Praxedes down and was in total control, the ref must have been seriously considering stopping the fight but Praxedes managed to hold on although he did not look too good going back to his corner.

Round 3.
Escobar took Praxedes down easily and with less than 1:05 of the round gone Escobar succeeded in submitting Praxedes with a choke hold.

Bout 3.
AJ Lias Mansor v Mitch Chilson

It’s AJ from Borneo against Evolve team member the American Mitch Chilson.
AJ came out too rapturous applause.
During the early stages of round 1 he quickly and easily took Chilson down but Chilson soon sprung up again and then he took AJ down, from there, Chilson was in control with a series of takedowns and then he got AJ’s back and at 1:39 he completed a rear naked choke and AJ had to tap.

End of the Prelims

Bout 4.
Brian Choi Vs Arnaud Lepont

Round 1.
These two didn’t bother with any niceties then went straight for it from the bell exchanging brutal blows and kicks before Choi got Lepont down about two minutes in and he controlled him for the best part of the next two minutes and then they spent the last-minute on their feet exchanging blows right at the death Arnaud from his back attempted a submission but it was too late as the bell rang.

Round 2.
Tehses two started the second round with a tap of gloves and then a hug and then another tap of the gloves much to the crowd’s delight.
Choi looks the fresher of the two at the start and the second round goes much like the first to start with Choi succeeding with a number of take downs and controlling the fight on the floor.

Round 3.
Lepont looks really tired but is not willing to give an inch, Choi again takes him down and commences to ground and pound but Lepont managed to escape and then from nowhere Lepont did what he has done so many times before and pulled a couple of submission attempts before finally getting a real tight rear naked choke which finished it as Choi had no option but to tap. A Lepont special.

Bout 5.
Bae Yong Kwon Vs Eric Kelly

I must admit that here at MMANewsAsia there is more than a little love for Eric “The Natural” Kelly and we were so pleased when we heard that he was back in the cage, it’s been too long.
This was not going to be an easy fight though and so it turned out as they exchanged heavy blows  from the First round,  Kwon also took Kelly down on a few occasions and looked to have him in trouble with a few solid submission attempts but Kelly survived.

Round 2.
The second round was another close fought battle with both fighters having their fair share of effective punches and kicks and submission attempts but although a close round Kwon got given a yellow card for an illegal elbow.

Round 3.
Again we had the same scene a very close fight and both fighters had their chances but then with just two minutes left Eric Kelly got his favored Rear Naked Choke on and it looked all over for Kwon, but somehow he managed to escape and Kwon was on top of him for the remainder of the round although not really in an effective way.
This was a very entertaining fight and the winner really earned his W tonight, the loser deserves another chance for sure.
Eric Kelly won with a unanimous decision much to the happy relief of the MMANewsAsia team.

Bout 6.
Grogor Gracie vs Adam Kayoom

This is a Gracie, the most famous name in MMA, against local hero Adam Kayoom. This is a fight that will make the crowd go crazy if the local boy wins.
But don’t forget he is fighting a Gracie it won’t be easy, but if he does it will be epic. Gracie is by far the younger at just 25 years of age against Kayooms 34.
Kayoome enters to Michael Jackson,s Don’t Stop To You Get Enough which got the crowd going even more.

Round 1.
A few early kicks from Kayoom but before the first minute is out Gracie has his first take down. He made best use of it and started to go to work on Kayoom, But being put on bis back by MMA royalty did not make him panic he remained calm and defended himself. With about 1:30 left Gracie took his back and started to pound him all the while I am sure looking for an opening for a rear naked choke but the clock kept ticking on and although Gracie stayed on top Kayoom made it relatively unscathed to the rounds end.

Round 2.
The round started with Kayoom throwing a few kicks unfortunately one of them hit the Gracie crown jewels and the fighters had a rest.
Kayoom again continued with kicks and when Gracie took him down Kayoom did his best to neutralize the situation and Gracie really struggled to make the best of it beyond being in top position
When the ref stood it back up Kayoom made Gracie pay and worked him, Gracie looked tired.

Round 3.
Kayoom did his best to keep the fight on its feet where he was definitely the boss, But of course Gracie took him down a few times, even so Gracie again really failed to do much beyond control Kayoom on the ground. The fight actually finished with Kayoom on top of Gracie and he really pounded him and when the fight finished Gracie did not get off the floor without help.
It was no surprise to anybody when it was announced Kayoom was victorious with a unanimous decision.
The crowd rightly went crazy this is a historic victory in Malaysian MMA a Malaysian fighter beating a member of the famed Gracie family.

Bout 7.

Leandro Issa Vs Masakaza Imanari

Ashikan Judan is what they call him Master of Leg Locks and with good reason, Imanari not only tells you what he is going to do to you, but then he does it, he does it with such astonishing speed that even though people expect It they seem powerless to stop it. It’s a special kind of magic. So Issa is really going to have to work hard.

Round 1.
Imanari is such a showman he just circles coolly and attempts a few spinning back fists this goes on for a full three minutes Issa does not really know what to do with him. I’m not sure if it was a punch or a kick but Imanari went down. Once on the ground Issa pounces and quickly grounds and pounds but Imanari is calm and it soon comes down to him beneath Issa but not really suffering too much damage.

Round 2.
Round 2 is much the same as the first until Issa does a great leg kick that takes Imanari down, but he gets up like nothing happened. Finally Issa get Imanari down and seems to be in control until about the last 15 seconds when they stand up again. Another blow from Issa and Imanari is down but stands up easily as the bell rings.

Round 3.
Same as the first two until on the three-minute mark Issa took Imanari down and again was controlling him, the feared leglock seemed just a rumor. With 1:40 to go they stood up but a few seconds later and Issa had Imanari down again. With a minute to go they again stood up. With 30 seconds to go Issa again had top position this must be his fight.
This fight goes to the judges and it’s Leandro Issa who is the winner by Unanimous Decision.

Bout 8.
Roger Huerta Vs Zorobabel Moeira

Round 1.
This was another fight that started full of hard-fought action with a tough and even first round probably with honors roughly even.

Round 2.
Moeira took control and started to really work Huerta over and many times he had him rocked before finally throwing him to the ground and holding him down and h\throwing an amazing football kick to the head of  an already dazed Huerta knocking him spark out in the most brutal fashion.

A superb display from Moeira and his third straight win in a ONE FC cage. Who can stop him?

Bout 9.
Renato Sobral Vs Tasuya Mizuno

Who could have believed it was true two such top quality fighters in a cage in Malaysia?
And anybody anywhere who knows MMA knows the name Renato “Bablu” Sobral he is literally as big a name as there is in MMA. God only knows how One FC managed to get him, but we here at MMANewsAsia are mighty glad he did, let’s just hope he can reach our expectations………………
And it was over before it began Mizuno threw a few big bombs and then from off of his back Zobral threw up an armbar and it was over. He did not disappoint! His speed was astounding.

So that was it a full night of incredible bouts. ONE FC really hit a home run with this show. It was slick and professional.

The MMANewsAsia team would like to thank ONE FC for looking after us.
