  • Tan Xing Hua Hello, my name is Tan Xing Hua; or as some people know me, Kyle Tan.

I do not currently train at JFC, nor am I in anyway related to Arvind; in fact, I was from a rival gym in Singapore (which I still train at regularly in my visits to Singapore, and have very strong ties with). I'm currently no longer based in Singapore but I can say for a fact that Arvind is definitely one of safety's biggest fan.

Some of you may ask who I am to pass off such a statement so I'll introduce myself a little. I'm a part-owner, trainer and a trainee at one of the biggest Muay Thai clubs in New Zealand. I was a Singapore BJJ Champion/Runner-up (noGI) at the novice and advance level a few years ago; I've placed in the for WPJJC the past two years (3rd and 2nd) at blue belt; and I'm the current Pan Pacific BJJ Champion at blue belt for GI, and Pan Pacific BJJ runner up at blue belt for noGI.

I've never ever been part of a gym that Arvind has been teaching at other than back in 2009/2010 for a month where I did boxing at FightWorksAsia with him due to a knee injury sustained during BJJ training in New Zealand. During this month I went to the gym to train with Arvind 3-4 times a week and not once have I seen him breach safety (it being physical, or hygiene wise). During sparring if you don't have 16oz gloves or head gear (and you refuse to wear the gym's gears) you are definitely not allowed to do sparring (being at a lighter weight back in the day and not having bought new ones yet I only had 14oz gloves which Arvind refused to allow me to wear). When you do the end of session circuit training Arvind is there (not just leaving his other instructors to watch you) watching to make sure you do the exercises right so that you do not injure yourself (I remember him telling me I was doing the kettle bell swings wrongly). At the end of it all he made sure that the gym was cleaned thoroughly with the right equipment. And at all times Arvind emphasized to me to not do anything that could aggravate my then current knee injury.

In more current times I have dropped by JFC to train with him and his team every year that I go back to Singapore. I have done MMA, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and mainly BJJ at JFC. I believe that all his trainers are very capable and knowledgeable in the safety aspects of their respective disciplines. I've trained with Danielle West their current MMA/Wrestling/noGI coach last year and she was extremely cautious when it came to us doing a flying armbar variation she was teaching; constantly emphasizing to do the roll very very slowly. I know their current Muay Thai coach, Wes Jaya, who has represented Malaysia in Muay Thai before; I've seen him do sparring and training with the students at JFC and I've never had any objection to the way its been done. Finally, Harold Ko is a friend and fellow competitor whom I highly respect in BJJ; he makes sure that techniques (especially sensitive ones such as leg locks) are done with the highest amount of care during training and sparring; during sparring Harold also makes sure that people are paired up accordingly.

Basically, never once have I had safety issues when it comes to training with Arvind or at JFC; and I highly recommend the club to people if safety was their main priority.

  • Silvia Bettoni Injuries are common in all sports, and I find it disgusting that you’ve chosen to highlight a head injury of a boxer that occurred during a training session considering the person who is injured is still recovering in hospital and is unable to comment on the facts.

This is a contact sport and injuries do happen, but I know for a fact that Arvind & the coaches who are very experienced do everything in power to make our training safe & enjoyable.

Using such a serious injury to question the capabilities of the coaching staff at any gym or sporting practice makes me question the ethics of the authors. I find the timing and potential motives questionable considering that JFC went 5-0 at the UB11.

I have been a member at JFC for over a year and I have never once thought my health or safety was at risk while training. At every sparring session, we are made to wear the suitable gloves and protective gear. I have never once heard the coaches tell us to go at 100%! To even question the capability of my coaches at JFC is absurd and I find it very disrespectful. Their number one priority is our safety; after all we are a family and family look after each other.

I would also like to point out that My friend Shahril who is not a vegetable was training for a BOXING match not MMA, so I am a little confused in your statement below -
‘Serious injuries are very rare in the sport of MMA and the sport possesses a safety record far superior to that of other high adrenaline sports such as BOXING, Formula ONE, wrestling, American Football, etc’

Unbalanced & opinionated articles like this damage the outside perception of the sport.

  • Gabriel Huang “We did our own investigation on this issue and have found out that the cited cases above actually occurred quite recently. According to sources very close to the situation, one of JFC’s fighters who was supposed to compete at last weekend’s Ultimate Beatdown XI, was unable to do so because he was not medically cleared by his doctor due to brain related injuries.”

To set the record straight, the fighter who was not medically cleared to compete at Ultimate beatdown had suffered an accidental knock to his head during a Brazilian Jiujitsu training session and not due to any form of striking to the head. As much as the fighter still wanted to participate, the management did the right and responsible thing to disallow him from taking part as a precautionary measure.

I seriously question where TFN gets its “verifiable” facts and information from.

  • Luc Rousseau after so many coments i read the article. with a very neutral mood. Euh....This article wasnt fair to juggernaut. It is made of non sense opinions, and clearly the goal is to put them down more than just gossiping. Seriously the sayings about mma is safe ssport and stuff is a huge bullshit, and we can argue so much. Now let me tell you, there is 2 types of gyms. Fighter gym (what arvind try to do, including also the fun aspect mma for everyone) and the commercial gyms (95% of asian mma gyms) From a sport results, juggernaut are doing great compare to all singaporeans or malaysian gyms, so his goal is reached. How can you expect, no injury, if you prepare for competition so many guys ? Now let me tell you. In wrestling the number of brain accident due to head shock is really comon, thats why most of olympic wrestlers had there noses broken many times and other head concusions. In BJJ maybe less, but its still possible, and its comon that guard players injurre their knees pretty bad and often. In boxing, how many times, with HEADGEARS, pro quality, boxers died from head shocks ? Valuev almost stop his career after killing his friend and sparring partner like that in 2005 i think.

  • Luc Rousseau Of course security can always been improved BUT, I WORKED with arvind ! i know him verry well, i know also some of his most dedicated boxers, AND, i can tell you they always always sparre, hard or light, with head gears (at least in fightworks was like that, and arvind was in charge of the boxing). I never heard him say lets go guy fuck each other up. I think he promotes more the tecnical aspect even in hard sparring. So yes i think wesley you should just appologize and delete article, to avoid having more n more noises.
