PXC Annonces Live Streaming Via Sherdog

PXC 34 Goes Global With Live Streaming Broadcast

Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC), the premier MMA organization in the Philippines and Asia Pacific Region, announced its entrance into digital broadcasting via a partnership with giant MMA website Sherdog.com. PXC 34, which takes place Nov 17th live from Manila, will be available to fans worldwide through a live streaming broadcast on Sherdog.com. The partnership with Sherdog is the latest in a series of ambitious steps taken by PXC, which prides itself as the premier talent generator for the Asia Pacific Region, to expand the profile of the promotion and its roster of fighters.
PXC is one of the first promotions to realize the potential of the Philippines as a growth market for mixed martial arts and has produced six highly rated events through its partnership with TV5, the largest television network in the Philippines. Past events have averaged over 450,000 live viewers during free to air broadcasts. PXC 34, which will feature a highly anticipated matches between current Flyweight Champ, Ale “The Young Gun” Cali and Philippine MMA Legend, Erwin Tagle plus Harris “The Hitman” Sarmiento versus undefeated prospect Mark “Mugen” Striegl. Both main events will be streamed on Sherdog.com concurrently with the TV 5 broadcast and is expected to open up PXC to a wide new audience outside the region.
“After 33 shows, PXC is finally streaming live so that the world can see the best MMA action in the Asia-Pacific region! The ability to have our shows easily available to anyone in the world through this partnership with Sherdog.com is a great leap forward for the company and just a hint of even bigger developments in the near future,” said PXC Promoter and CEO EJ Calvo.
Sherdog.com has long been a digital media pioneer in mixed martial arts and is one of the most recognizable and powerful media voices in the sport. Sherdog executive editor Greg Savage made the following comment about the growing phenomenon of sports being viewed on the Internet and about the PXC partnership,
“Digital streaming is a great way to increase the viewership of mixed martial arts beyond the traditional territorial television model. Our deals with PXC and our other streaming partners allow us to promote the sport we have spent so much time helping to build over the past 15-plus years to as wide an audience as possible. For us it brings new viewers to our brand while increasing the exposure of these regional promotions in the process. This win-win partnership also provides an avenue for the dedicated global MMA community to see the stars of tomorrow fighting today on Sherdog.com.”

Lanky Madness Will The Kill Chope gets his Shot

It's On Will The Kill Chope Get's His Shot

Will Chope has been building up a great head of steam recently and it has not gone unnoticed by one of Asia's outstanding MMA organisations. The URCC is Asia's longest running organisation, based in that Asian hotbed of MMA the Philippines and run by Alvin and bubbles Aguilar the URCC has long been a favourite of real MMA fans in the area.

Chope has been working his lanky madness skinny white ass off like a mad man all over the region recently but never let his mind slip from the big picture a title fight in the URCC, anybody who has seen his recent bouts in the organisation would have seen him reaching around his waist to signify a belt when he wins.

It's a great fight for the URCC, Chope although he hates the fact just will never be as popular as a pinoy fighter in the URCC, so even though he has a lot of Philippine fans, ultimately every time he steps into the ring against a homegrown fighter he is up against it. he usually wins the crowd over, but ultimately he has to start again for the next fight.

When he finally faces Ricardo Sapno he will have the usual height advantage, he is after all 6'4" tall against Sapno's 5'7" they are both young men and have many fights ahead of them.

Chope is 5-0 in his URCC career and Sapno is 5-1 so you know this is going to be an explosive match-up.

Chope who is well known for fighting as often as posible regardless of where or even when. He has been fighting in China recently. He also is expected back in Malaysia to defend his F3 title. It will be interesting to see if the busy Chope has picked up enough experience to gain yet another title.

Either way it will surely be an outing for Team Buffet and their many Philippine fans.

The URCC have some pretty amazing bouts coming up soon as they will be celebrating ten wonderful years in Asian MMA, Let's hope for many more.

World Series of Fighting

World Series of Fighting ~ A New Show In Town

OK so we have all heard the news, the stories have been gathered, the pundits have spoken, finally it's here: This coming weekend we shall get the first event from a new organisation the World Series of Fighting.

For a new organisation they have certainly come out of the traps at a fair pace with a TV deal in their pockets. In America the event will be shown live on NBC Sports Network.

The event is being held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino which is about as mid strip as you can get in Las Vegas. It's a great venue and the early reports are it's going to be a sell out. That's an American sell-out not an Asian one.

So as with all MMA organisations they need a front man. Who is WSoF's Dana White? Only New Zealander Ray Sefo that's all. A man who has built a massive reputation as a fighter, he has fought professionally as a Boxer, Kickboxer and MMA fighter and is a multiple world champion. He knows the business very well and he is not even officially retired at age 41. In fact rumours persist that he may indeed fight on a future WSoF card.

Of course at the moment WSoF cannot hope to compete with the UFC on quality of fighters, but let's have a look at the card and see what they are working with for this first show:

One thing is for sure WSoF is not some playground for unproven amateurs to fight and be hyped like they are the next big thing when in fact they are not and never will be. This is a real organisation with real potential. Looking at this card I think that Bellator should be very worried about their number 2 status, the card over all is very strong.

Bout 1:

Waylon Lowe (13-4-0) vs Fabio Mello (11-6-0)

Lowe at 31 with a six year profesional career must be pleased to see the arrival of the WSoF after two failed attempts at the UFC this is another chance in the International limelight. He is no joke, he has a seriously good career only really failing once he hits UFC level and frankly losing to Nick Lentz or Melvin Guillard is nothing to be ashamed of and the simple fact is he is still a respectable 2-2 with the UFC.

Mello has never reached the UFC heights although he has a solid Bellator record and seems to have fought in almost every organisation known to man. he is coming into this fight on a seven fight win streak and at age 37 must know this is his last chance to really shine. He is a submission specialist and will want to take this to the ground.

Bout 2:

Gesias Cavalcante (16-6-1-2) vs T J O'Brien (18-5-0)

Cavalcante is a K1 and Dream veteren out of Brazil. He once had a very solid record and seemed destined for great things but since a 2008 no contest against Shinya Aoki (Cavalcante alleged to have used illegal elbows) and then he lost the rematch. His record from 2008 is (2-5-0-2).

O'Brien has failed in his two attempts at UFC stardom but his record outside of it is stunning. This could be a great fight. One on the way down the other on the way up, who will win? I think that O'Briend ground skills (he has won 17 fights via submission) could provide the answer.

Bout 3:

Steve Carl (18-3-0) vs Ramico Blackmon (8-1-0)

Carl is a Bellator veteren with a great ground game and aged just 27 seems poised for greater success if he can get past blackmon.

Blackmon is going to find it tough and will have to pull something special out of the hat, he is durable, his record shows that but I am not sure he can defend against a more effective ground game.

Bout 4:

David Branch (10-3-0) vs Dustin Jacoby (8-2-0)

Branch a Bellator and UFC veteren is still only 30 he must be itching to get back into the big time. This sold out televised show will ease that itch, now it's down to him.

Jacoby also had a stint in the UFC although not as successful as Branch, but he does have age on his side and out side of the UF C he is unbeaten, does he have the knock out power to stop Branch.

Bout 5:

Gerald Harris (21-4-0)  vs Josh Burkman (23-9-0)

Harris is a real all rounder with his wins coming in almost equal measure through ko's, submissions and decisions. He has skill, a good engine and we should be assured of a great fight when he enters the cage.

Burkman had a much longer UFC career than Harris and like Harris he is very well rounded. This should prove to be a very exciting fight.

Bout 6:

Ronys Torres (25-4-0) vs Brian Cobb (19-7-0)

Torres is another fighter with a failed UFC campaign behind him, however since then he has gone of a bit of a tear up and is riding high on a eleven fight winning streak. being a Brazilian it's almost obligatory that he have great ground skills, however he can also back it up with knock out power.

Cobb had his brief moment in the UFC and since then has struggled to build a real winning run. He also has a great ground game.

Bout 7:

Tyrone Spong (no record) vs Travis Bartlett (7-2-0)

Spong may be new to MMA but he is a well known kick boxer having fought in K-1. He has fought the likes of Alistair Overeem so this wont faze him.

Bartlett may well have been hand picked for Spong. His strength is his stand-up and he has proven knock-out power. Expect fireworks from these two. big explosions and if it goes to the ground I will be surprised.

Bout 8:

Gregor Gracie (7-2-0) vs Tyson Steel (9-1-0)

Gracie looks to be outclassed on this card, he may carry a famous name but he has not been fighting anywhere near the top of the tree.

Steel like Gracie is a ground expert and the hope must be that these two do not put on a very technical ground bout that although it will excite the purists will surely annoy the notoriously fickle Las Vegas crowd.

Bout 9:

Miguel Torres (40-5-0) vs Marlon Moraes (8-4-1)

Torres is loaded with experience and at just 31 years of age potentially has many more years fighting left in him. He has powerful hands and an impressive ground game. He had a great record in the now defunct WEC and a 2-2 UFC record. However his last seven fights covering 2009 onwards see him with a 3-4 record. This is is chance to get back into the headlines.

Moraes on the other hand is in a win win situation, he has fought at a much lower level and if he loses most would say they expected it, if he wins his stock would jump up massively.

Bout 10:

Anthony Johnson (13-4-0) vs DJ Linderman (13-3-0)

Johnson has been fighting at a much higher level than Linderman.

Linderman is going to need to really bring his A game to stop Johnson.

Main Event:

Andrei Arlovski (17-9-0) vs Devin Cole (20-9-1)

Arlovski is finished he should retire, sure he can win this but what will it prove, he will never make the UFC again unless it is a can for some up and coming young gun to knock over.

Cole has knock out power.

Sadly the last two bouts on this card are all about the names, sure they can sell tickets but the fights lower down the card promise much more excitement and I hope that in later events WSoF will be big enough to ignore these sort of fights and give us what we want. The best of the rest. 80% of this card promises big things for what could very quickly become the worlds number two MMA organisation.

Nate Diaz’s Chance to Shine

Nate Diaz’s Chance to Shine

Come December 8, Nate Diaz will have his chance to shine bright, after spending years under the shadow of his brother.

While the TUF 5 winner has been on a tear lately, it seems that his older brother Nick Diaz has managed to steal the limelight, despite being on a year-long suspension after testing positive for marijuana metabolites after his controversial fight against Carlos Condit.

Nate is only 27, and surely has a long career ahead of him. But after years of hard work with Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu and the Skrap Pack, he gets his chance to prove that he is one of the best lightweights in the world.

After a rough stretch as a welterweight, losing to Kim Dong-Hyun and Rory MacDonald, he dropped back to the 155 lb division and won 3 fights in a row, and three bonus awards in a row (submission of the night twice, and one fight of the night). He displayed markedly improved boxing against Takanori Gomi before submitting him with a beautiful armbar, had a tough back and forth fight against Donald Cerrone where he drew his opponent into a strike-fest, and put on a true MMA-clinic against Jim Miller, finally submitting him in the 2nd round with a guillotine choke.

While he isn’t as brash as his older brother, he is also known for his antics both inside and out of the Octagon. On TUF 5, he was seen getting into an argument with Rob Emerson, taking off his shirt and wanting to throw down. And against Cerrone, he had no qualms about flipping the finger (well two fingers) in between rounds.

Benson Henderson will have the size advantage and almost certainly the wrestling advantage, but will Diaz be able to draw Henderson into the kind of fight he is best at?

He managed to pull Cerrone into a boxing match in the 1st and 3rd rounds, ultimately getting into his head and put on a slugfest. Against Miller, his trash talking and “gestures” got to him, and Diaz was able to pull off what Rogan called a “power guillotine”.

Henderson, however, probably won’t be so easy to get to. His ideal game plan would be to either throw combinations and move out of harms way, or to take a slight risk by taking Diaz down and out-wrestling him.

Diaz will have to either work hard to land his shots clean on Henderson, or work very well off his back (which he is comfortable off). There is a fair chance Diaz will be able to pull a quick submission off at one point, and that may be his only chance at beating Henderson to become the champion.

Either way, this will be Nate Diaz’s chance to show the world what he can do, and Henderson will definitely push him and bring the best out of the Stockton fighter. One hopes that Diaz takes this opportunity to make the most of it – chances like this don’t come around too often.

What Is Happening To MMA in Malaysia?

Malaysian Fighting Championship Affected By Controversy

Things were looking good for Malaysia MMA, Muayfit are running two events, Balls to Brawl and Malaysian Fighting Championship, We still have Ultimate Beatdown, F3 and possibly even Gods? Now a new name Legionnaire.

Yet on Saturday night in Kuala Lumpur at the new MFC venue it would appear some people set out to damage the name of MMA in Malaysia.

During one of the bouts my understanding is (I was not there) after a fighter was awarded a red card for  breaking the rules, a member of the crowd spat at the official. A disgusting and cowardly act. I hope if this person is attached to an MMA gym that they make him apologise for his actions. If they do not, I do not think they should be allowed to participate in future events.

I also understand that their was lots of needless shouting of religious slogans, abusive language and insults of officials.

And then we had the situation where somebody part way through a bout rung the officials bell causing the fight to be (wrongly) stopped.

None of these things reflect well on the sport of MMA in Malaysia.

The people behind the Malaysian Fighting Championship (Muayfit) put a lot of work into setting up this type of event and what happened is very sad. Luckily for Malaysian MMA it does not appear to have put Muayfit off and they are already organising the next event for November 24th. Let's hope the trouble makers stay away.

Name Change and Shit!

MMANewsAsia is Dead

So What's New?

The smarter amongst you may have noticed the name of the site has changed.

We have thought long and hard before making this decision but finally we realised we had to make a change.

Initially we wanted to concentrate on the Asian MMA scene but we had problems, people did not like us writing about them in a truthful or negative way. Those that know us will know what we went through.

We decided because of various things that happened not to write about certain organisations.

We refused to write what we did not believe in and our website became less of a place we wanted to visit ourselves because we knew we were censoring ourselves

At about this time we also cancelled the podcast. At it's height we were getting 1500 listens a week but again we felt constrained, we could not say what we wanted.

So, heres the plan. We are going to relaunch and write about MMA in a general way, covering what ever gives us pleasure when we want to. We will of course cover Asian MMA that's where we are based, but if we wanna cover Aussie MMA, British MMA, UFC whatever, well we will.

We remain MMA fans and we remain independent. Those in the know, KNOW.

We want to say thank you to some people who got us this far, we won't name, names hopefully you know who you are.
