Indian MMA continues to Move Forward
An article on Opposing Views.com has given
us some more details on the upcoming Full Contact Championship Event (October
27th at Famous Studios, Mumbai, India)
We are told that the event will be
headlined by MMA debutant, American born Eddie Teel, no opponent is lined up
yet.
Fights that are confirmed are:
Sagar Kadu an FCC regular (3-0) and he is
fighting Aditya Deshpande (1-0)
Gaurav Panday (2-0) vs Ashish Jadhav (no record)
The Indian MMA scene is very small. FCC is
it’s longest established organization and of course we now also have the
SuperFight League and it’s Bollywood/MMA mix including it’s TUFalike TV show
SFL Challengers.
Of course the Indian scene whilst small is
a market worth growing due to the massive potential size of the market. It’s
such an enticing market that the UFC are set to have an Indian TUF series.
Even with the might of the UFC’s marketing
dollar I still think we are a long way from finding an Indian MMA fighter who
could compete on the world stage. (I am not including those fighters who are
suddenly returning to their Indian roots from all points around the world to be
big fish in a small pond).
That being said the Indian pool of MMA
fighters is very shallow, anybody who watched SFL challengers would realize that
many of the fighters did not even know the rules and few have access to good
training facilities.
It’s just a simple fact, those fighters we
are seeing now are the pioneers, they are the ones who will enable the
sport to grow. It’s very easy for westerners watching these events to make fun
of the quality of the fighters but it’s a new sport and at present it’s very
much a minority sport.
People like the organisers of the Full
Contact Championship are involved in Indian MMA at a very exciting time.
So, if you care about Asian MMA give them
your support because the Indians are coming.
