PXC 35 Sarmiento Puts His Title On The Line
source manilastandardtoday.com
Fil-Am Sarmiento puts PXC title on the line
Slambang action is expected when Fil-Am Harris Sarmiento stakes his lightweight title against undefeated young fighter Isaiah Ordiz this Saturday in PXC 35 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Ordiz, who has just two wins in mixed martial arts fighting, but a perfect 16-0 as a muay thai fighter, upped the ante last Tuesday when he claimed Harris, coming off a submission loss in a non-title fight last November, is ripe for the picking.
But Sarmiento, dubbed the “Hitman,” laughed it off, saying when he lost to Baguio’s Mark Striegl, he was not in his top fighting shape because he had to shed lots of weight to make the featherweight limit.
Back in his regular fighting weight, Sarmiento, 29, claimed the 27-year-old Ordiz, a native of Laguna, is in for a hell of a fight.
Sarmiento has won 35 and lost 24, and is one of the most experienced fighters in the Asia-Pacific region where the PXC has made big inroads as the MMA organization.
PXC chief executive officer EJ Calvo said the fight will be a big test for Ordiz.
“We love testing young fighters. When a young fighter wins, he gets a shot at a bigger fight,” said Calvo, adding: “PXC-35 brings a great mix of international talents back to Manila. PXC’s live broadcasts have helped make MMA one of the fastest growing sports in the Philippines. It has been a great opportunity for fighters to gain exposure.”
Clashing in the main supporting bout of the event presented by San Mig Strong Ice and Sports 5 and backed by E-Games, Fitness First, FHM Philippines, FHM.com.ph, Premiere Condoms, Healthway Agility Phil, Beer Below Zero, Eden NightClub, Real Sports Radio, and Loqal.ph are American Alvin Cacdac (11-9) and undefeated Hawaiian Louis “Da Last Samurai” Smolka, with the winner likely to be the next contender for the flyweight crown currently held by Filipino Ale “The Young Gun” Cali.
Guam’s Tony Reyes (5-5) battles Team Lakay’s Troy Bantiag (4-1), Japanese Chuji Kato (3-1) takes on Korean Top Team’s Hong Seung Chan (2-0), and Hawaiian Ronald Jhun (24-24) faces Zebastian Kadestam (3-0) of Sweden.

PXC 35 - Fightcard and Preview
PXC 35 - Preview and Fightcard
This Saturday Night in MMA mad Manila at the Ynares Sports Arena one of Asia's biggest most recognisable MMA organisations Pacific X-Treme will roll out there 35th event.
PXC are not an organisation that thrives on hype or by controlling what is written about their events, they prefer to let the success of their events and their fighters speak for themselves and they declare the real ticket sales figures and TV viewers that their events achieve.
So, we have decided to have a look at the card and have our say.
Bout 1: Lightweight: Glen Ranillo (1-2-0) vs Mark Billena (debut)
Ranillo has had all his pro fights in the PXC and needs a to put on a big display after suffering two losses in a row. Billena is making his pro debut so will to a big degree be an unknown quantity at this level.
Bout 2: Featherweight: Miguel Mosquera (debut) vs Steve Grandeza (0-1-0)
Mosquera is making his debut against Grandeza who lost last time out on his own debut at 2:20 of Round 1.
Bout 3: Flyweight: Ruel Catalan (1-2-0) vs Ernesto Montilla Jr (0-1-0)
Catalan lost his pro debut at the URCC, then pulled a win at a little known organisation that only has one bout listed on Sherdog.com, from that he was picked up by Legend where he lost in round 1 via submission. He would appear to be a a tough but beatable opponent to Montillo who lost his debut via a decision.
Bout 4: Welterweight: Ronald Jhun (24-25-2) vs Zebaztian Kadestam (3-0-0)
Jhun is a vastly experienced fighter who started his career like a fireball and even had two attempts at the UFC both losses, since his second UFC loss (2004 to Chris Lytle) his career has been on a terrible long downward slide standing at 3-13-0 so although at a casual glance this might look like a mismatch it actually might be a great opportunity for Kadestam who has two wins at DARE and last time out on his PXC debut. This could be a very interesting bout.
Bout 5: Bantamweight: Dario Banario (2-0-0) vs Joseph Mercado (1-0-0)
Banario started in the URCC with a win on his debut then he moved on to PXC where he fought to a tough decision win. Mercado stands at 1-1 but his loss via decision was to Troy Bantiag who is one of the toughest Bantamweights in the Philippine Bantamweight class.
Bout 6: Lightweight: Chuji Kato (3-1-1) vs Egon Racz (2-3-1)
Kato makes his PXC debut after a decent career in Shooto. Racz needs to put on a decent showing to get his career back on song. He was a late replacement for Egon Racz.
Bout 7: Bantamweight: Tony Reyes (5-5-0) vs Troy Bantiag (4-1-0)
Reyes is on a terrible four fight losing streak although all but the last one were via decisions. Bantiag is going to be a really tough bout for Reyes.
Bout 8: Flyweight: Louis Smolka (2-0-0) vs Alvin Cacdac (11-9-0)
Smolka has two solid wins but is coming up against Cacdac who is a kind of win one lose one guy, this could be a tough bout with the winner moving up the ladder a few steps.
Bout 9: PXC Lightweight Title Bout:
Harris Sarmiento (35-24-0) vs Isaiah Ordiz (2-0-0)
What can you say about Harris Sarmiento? not many people amass a pro career of almost 60 bouts, the fact that Sarmiento is going to do that before age 30 is amazing and he for sure will want to do that retaining his championship. Of course last time out he stepped down a weight class to tackle one of PXC's fastest rising stars Mark Striegl, a mistake as Stiregl dispatched him with apparent ease.
Ordiz is a different kind of opponent with just two fights and wins to his name this might be seen as a lop sided bout. Ordiz has proved he is fit and tough by going the distance both times including a recent split decision win against Tristan Arenal ex Strikeforce fighter. Ordiz has a great boxing game, however that might not be a great way to tackle Sarmiento. Expect fireworks!

UFC on Fuel TV 7 - Preview
UFC on Fuel TV 7 - Preview
February 16th at Wembley Arena, London
A 12 fight card with a good few UK fighters to keep the crowd happy.
The first six fights listed below will all be available to view live on facebook.
Prelims (on facebook)
Bout 1: Flyweight: Ulysses Gomez (9-3-0) USA vs Phil Harris (21-10-0-1) England
Gomez and Harris are both already in a position of fighting for their UFC lives as they are coming off of debut UFC losses. Gomez was KO'ed in just 3:46 of Round 1. Harris lasted longer but was still submitted at 3:38 of Round 2. Both these fighters will have to put on a real good showing. They both show that the UFC is a real step up no matter how successful you have been in 'lesser' organisations.
Bout 2: Bantanweight: Vaughan Lee (12-8-1) England vs Montonobu Tezuka (19-5-4) Japan
Lee is a ten year veteren of the pro MMA game and finally made the UFC in late 2011. He has had three UFC bous and stands at 1-2 so he has not made a big statement yet.
Tezuka is a Pancrase and Deep veteren who made an interesting UFC debut losing a split decision to Alex Caceres.
Bout 3: Middleweight Stanislav Nedkov (12-0-0-1) Bulgaria vs Tom Watson (15-5-0) England
Nedkov is a beast who stepped into the UFC cage for the first time with a first round TKO of Luiz Cane. His next fight was against Thiago Silva and he lost in the third round via arm triangle choke. However the result was overturned to a No Contest as Silva had a failed a pre-fight drug test.
Watson did not storm the UFC losing his first bout via split decision to Brad Tavares back in September 2012. If Watson wants a UFC career this is a fight that he must win. Nedkov will I think be a step too far.
Bout 4: Featherweight: Josh Grispi (14-4-0) USA vs Andy Ogle (8-2-0) England
Grispi must count himself very lucky to be in this bout after a straight three fight losing streak since joining the UFC from WEC. Ogle has lost his one and only UFC bout via a split decision against Akira Corassani this really is a must win bout it's a close to a gimmie as the UFC can give. That's not to say that Grispi is not good enough, but the UFC don't often put a 3-0 fighter into a bout unless they are looking to make room on their roster. I predict whichever fighter loses this bout gets shown the door,
Bout 5: Lightweight: Paul Sass (13-1) England vs Danny Castillo (14-5-0) USA
Sass is 3-1 in the UFC and is a real submission expert so it was with some shock that he suffered a submission loss to Matt Wiman, last time out. Castillo is 4-2 in the UFC and is also coming off of a loss. He is a tough fighter and is as likely to win by a KO or a Decision. This should be a tough battle unless Sass has got his confidence back.
Bout 6: Lightweight: Terry Etim (15-4-0) England vs Renee Forte (7-2-0) Brazil
Nobody can forget Etims last bout as he fell like s statue feeled by Edson Barboza's highlight reel Spinning Wheel Kick. It will be interesting to see how he responds to that shocking knockout. He has been in the UFC since 2007 and stands at 6-4. Forte is another Brazilian, however he is no Edson Barboza yet. His UFC debut was a third round submission loss to Sergio Moaraes. Is this is a good time to fight Etim, maybe he will come back with a new determination or maybe he has been shaken to his core by that kick. It remains to be seen. Personally I think Etim will come through with a win.
Main Card
Bout 7: Welterweight: Matt Riddle (7-3-0-1) USA vs Che Mills (15-5-0-1) England
Riddle has spent his whole pro MMA career in the UFC after coming through the Ultimate Fighter Season 7. He has failed to set the MMA world alight though but does provide a solid opponent to anybody. Mills is one tough dude with more than half of his wins coming via TKO/KO. I think Riddle is going to be hard pushed to stop him.
Bout 8: James Te Huna (15-5-0) Australia vs Ryan Jimmo (17-1-0) Canada
Te Huna is a hard punching KO specialist however, maybe he will be standing a little bit further back from the action as usual as Ryan Jimmo's last bout was a stunning seven second knockout of Aussie Anthony Perosh. This promises to be an explosive bout.
Bout 9: Welterweight: Gunnar Nelson (10-1-0) Iceland vs Jorge Santiago (25-10-0) Brazil
Nelson made an impressive UFC debut submitting DaMarques Johnson in the first round via rear naked choke, Santiago is making a UFC comeback after being dropped in 2011. This will be his third spell in the UFC and at present he stands at (1-4) he seems to have what it takes in the "Lesser" championships (he is on a two fight win streak in TFC) but struggles in the 'Big Game' this I am sure is his last chance. Gunnar Nelson is not the kind of opponent you want to meet in a comeback fight.
Bout 10: Light Heavyweight: Jimi Manuwa (12-0-0) England vs Cyrille Diabate (19-8-1) France
Manuwa is yet to taste defeat and has never even been taken the distance. Obviously he has only had one fight in the UFC but he did an admirable job forcing a second round doctors stoppage on Kyle Kingsbury.
Diabate will obviously be the enemy of this crowd as the old English vs France rivalry will be re-ignited, this time in a cage. Diabate stands at 4-2 in the UFC and will not in anyway be a pushover for Manuwa. In fact this will be a massive test of just how good Manuwa is.
Bout 11: Featherweight: Cub Swanson (18-5-0) USA vs Dustin Poirier (13-2-0) USA
Swanson is coming off of a three fight win streak all via TKO/KO and this bout promises to be an interesting battle as I am sure Poirier will be hoping to take it to the ground and Swanson for sure will want it to be stand-up.
Bout 12: Bantamweight: Main Event:
Renan Pegado (29-1-0) Brazil vs Michael McDonald (15-1-0) USA
Interim Bantamweight Title Bout
Known to all as Renan Barao, he has not lost a pro fight since his pro debut in 2005, since then he has just gone on a massive unstoppable streak leading up to his entry into the UFC. His UFC record stands at 4-0. Barao has unbelievable momentum and this fight promises very little on the upside for him but a massive downside if he should lose.
McDonalds UFC record stands at 3-0, his sole pro-career loss was in 2009 to Cole Escovedo which he avenged when they met again in 2010. This promises to be a very exciting fight and regardless of Barao's record McDonald is a very dangerous opponent.
Bellator - Spike TV Viewership Five Times Bigger Than MTV Figures
Bellator Viewership on Spike TV Still Growing
Bellator have recieved good news on the viewership figures on Spike TV for the Alexander Shlemenko vs Maiquel Falcao match. The fight for the vacant Bellator Middleweight Title recorded 807,000 viewers. This was a big step up of 14 percent from the previous week.
These numbers are some five times higher than they used to get on MTV 2.
These figures must be music to the ears of the three Phuket Top Team fighters who are signed for the organisation. JJ Ambrose and Brothers Anthony and Andrew Leone. Phuket Top Team is really making a big noise in the Asian MMA consistently attracting top quality MMA talent to train at it's facility.

Rear Naked News Editors Note:
I just don't know what to make of this event. On the surface it seems to be all that's wrong with Japanese MMA.
A load of fighters with piles of fights under their belts, some with winning records others with very average ones.
What are you to make of a bout where a man who is 21-21-4 is due to tackle a man without a win to his name at 0-4?
Or another where a very experienced 44-29-10 tackels a man with a 12-25-6 record.
And all the draws in these Japanese organisations that have two round fights. What's the point?
Why not go to three round bouts, people feel cheated when they see draws.
It's shocking and sad to see how Japanese MMA continues to fade.
U-Spirits Again is to be held on March 9th 2013 at Korakuen Hall, Tokyo.

News From RUFF - A New Champion Is Crowned
HOHHOT, China – It was
fantastic finishes all around at the 2013 RUFF Super
Fight, as Wang Guan, Irshaad Sayed, Zhang MeiXuan, Rodrigo Caporal,
and Zhao ZiLong walked away with China’s first MMA
national championship belts and 1-million RMB a piece in prize money.
“Our
champions are world class,” offered RUFF CEO Joel Resnick. “People came to win
today, they had it in their minds to finish quickly. Each one of these guys who
won today earned the right to be [a champion].”
Featherweight Wang Guan
(6-0 RUFF) was in trouble early in the first round of the MMA H.E.A.T. main
event, spending the majority of the frame on his back, while absorbing heavy
grounded strikes from opponent Wu ChengJie (3-1 RUFF).
Returning to
his feet after escaping Wu ChengJie’s pressure on the mat, Wang Guan landed a
pair of devastating knees to the body that sent Wu falling to the canvas. Wang
then quickly pounced on the obviously stunned Wu, delivering an attack of
elbows and hammer fists before referee Jerin Valel called an end to the contest
at 4:22 of round one.
“I’m not
weak on the ground. My strength is standing, but I’m okay on the ground,”
commented Wang Guan. “I love
RUFF . . . and I want to thank my family and
coaches.”
In the
co-main event, Irshaad Sayed (4-1 RUFF) boxed his way past grappler Yuan ChunBo
(2-3 RUFF) to become China’s first bantamweight MMA national champion.
Sayed delivered an
impressive performance, landing significant strikes to the head and body in
high volume, while avoiding Yuan ChunBo’s
repeated attempts to bait him to the ground. Unable to match Sayed’s power and
relentless pressure, ChunBo did little damage, eating Sayed’s crisp punches,
which sent him to ground on several occasions.
Yuan ChunBo
did manage one solid ground attack in the second stanza, catching Sayed briefly
in a guillotine, even taking the South African’s back at one point. But Sayed
was too strong in the end, reversing his position to take control from the top
and land an assault of elbows to the head. With Yuan ChunBo unable to defend
himself, referee Jerin Valel stopped the fight at 4:22 of the second round.
“We knew
what ChunBo was going to do so we worked on some submission defenses to keep
the fight standing and not go into his guard,” commented Sayed. “We went to the
floor but I didn’t panic. It was a situation that we drilled.”
Meeting
for the third time inside the RUFF cage, flyweights Zhang MeiXuan (4-1 RUFF)
and Liu PingYuan (4-3 RUFF) continued where they left
off after RUFF 5,
battering each other with punches and kicks, attempting a variety of
submissions.
After Zhang MeiXuan landed a head kick to open
the fight, Liu PingYuan battled back, setting up a takedown with a punch
combination. The match quickly shifted momentum, as Zhang MeiXuan appeared to
sink in a guillotine, but Liu PingYuan escaped to take top position.
With Liu
PingYuan stuck inside half guard, Zhang MeiXuan swept to take top position, but
the contest continued to shift back and forth at a dizzying speed, and Liu
PingYuan came out of the scramble and caught Zhang in an armbar.
Refusing to
tapout, Zhang MeiXuan escaped the armbar by slamming to Liu PingYuan to the
ground, and then attempted a series of ankle locks to no avail. Unable to find
success in his submission game, Zhang MeiXuan returned to his feet before
diving back into top position to deliver a brief ground and pound.
Zhang MeiXuan
then pulled out of Liu PingYuan’s guard, dropped back, and took the ankle one
more time. Again, Liu PingYuan rolled to escape, but with no real estate
remaining in the cage, he was caught, and tapped out due to heel hook at 3:11
of round one.
“I learned
that move from my coach Vaughn Anderson,” stated Zhang MeiXuan. “He really
taught me a lot about how to fight on the ground.”
For the
fourth time inside the RUFF cage, Hong Kong-based BJJ black belt Rodrigo
Caporal (5-0 RUFF) finished his opponent, forcing Wu HaoTian (1-2 RUFF) to
tapout at 1:31 of round one.
Having
already knocked Wu HaoTian out at RUFF 5, Caporal delivered
another decisive win to capture the China’s MMA national lightweight
championship.

for exercise
Any big plans for the new year?
my plans for the new year are the same as ever -
DESTROY ALL HUMANS !
what was your time like in the TUF house?
I loved my time in the house it was cool! train, eat,
wind people up, sleep, wind people up, sleep and fight .
was there many pranks you guys did that wasn't shown
on tv?
A Few muhaha!
What was it like to be Coached by fellow Northerner
Ross Pearson?
I've trained with Ross loads in the past so it was
great to have him as a coach in the TUF smashes because he nows what I'm like
and how I do things a little different to others .
Did you learn anything from the guys you trained with?
yeah I always learn different things from everyone
does thing slightly different so I love to train with new guys and their where
some really great guys and coaches.
We all felt for you in the final, but you showed
Norman Parke a lot of respect! do you think it was too much?
My fight with Norman was awful for me I'd prepared for
the fight of my life physically I felt better than ever but I made a huge
mistake in not thinking about how much I liked the guy ! the second
I got in the cage and looked at him my head fell of I couldn't turn on and
fight hard it was the strangest feeling I've ever felt ! But I love norm and
can't think of a more deserving winner. Also I learned a huge lesson about
myself and if a similar situation ever arose I'd no to get myself prepared
mentally as well as physically .
Do you think if you had fought anyone else it would of
been a different result?
I'm 100% sure if I'd been fighting someone else it
would of been a totally story I've never fought some I know before. I thought
I'd deal with it better but my heads a mixed up place.
Have you heard anything from the UFC since your fight?
No not really but I'm pretty confident I'll get a
chance to put things right.
If the UFC doesn't offer you a further contract will
you stay at BAMMA or look to fight in the states?
Yeh of course if the UFC released me I'd continue to
fight anyone anywhere any time in a fighter I was born this way I think it
reflects in my normal style I'm looking to finish the fight all the time not
just coast through I take chances in fights I love it !
We currently saw you at BAMMA 11 what was you take on
the fights?
Yeah I always take lady Freakshow to BAMMA we enjoyed
it their where a few good fights on the 11 card.
And the new BAMMA champions?
I think BAMMA have some very strong champions who
would fit in comfortably to the UFC especially the lightweights.
What can we expect from "The Freakshow" in
2013?
I plan to learn my lesson from my fight with Norman
I'm sometimes to soft with people in training and in life this year I'm gonna
take things more seriously I've got this fair not taking things so serious so
expect to see a much hungrier dangerous Freakshow !
Is there anyone you wanna thank? fans, team family
etc......?
I'd like to thank my coaches nick hands, warren Oliver
and Paul hubber all the guys at the fight-pit, the unity gym and Spartans my
