What’s going on besides UB9? Well, Nitro and Shooto

What’s going on besides UB9? Well, Nitro and Shooto

UB9 of course is this weekend in Johor Bahru

but there are other events going on in the Asian Pacific area this weekend

Obviously as a Malaysian based website based out of Johor we are going to be following our local event big time. We are all about the grass-roots of MMA here at MMANewsAsia and UB9 Evolution is going to be the breakout show for the Ultimate Beatdown franchise. And it’s a huge fight card.

But there will be other events in the wider Asian Pacific world of MMA from other promotions (with varying degree of quality…and quantity) coming up . (NOTE: we will be covering Phukets Island Fight Night in a separate article)

Nitro MMA (Australia) boasts the biggest card in terms of quantity with 11 scheduled fights. Taking place at Logan Entertainment Centre, Logan City on July 7th the fights will be fun to watch especially with MMA growing at a ridiculous pace in Australia. The card contains only Australian fighters so the promotion you might be seeing the future of Australian MMA at Logan Centre.

Japanese MMA is at an all-time low and the likes of Deep and Shooto are struggling to put on a show anymore. Gig West 14 is a 4-fight card with the main event featuring Kentaro Watanabe and Kyung Ho Park. The Editor will be grateful to know that most of the fighters have a positive professional fight record this time. Shooto: Gig West 14 takes place Abeno-kumin Center Hall, Osaka, Japan on July 8th.

Shooto Gig Tokyo 10

Shooto Gig Tokyo 10

Published on June 28, 2012 by The Editor in Shooto

This weekend is yet another Shooto show.Gig Tokyo 10

I would love to be all excited about this event but frankly as with most of the Japanese organisations it’s hard to know what’s going on. I mean don’t get me wrong they are kind enough to offer an English language tab on their website. But clicking it really does not bring anything that resembles English or useful.

So here are all the details as taken from Sherdog.com.

According to them it’s a one fight event as Yuta Sasaki (9-1-1) and Teruyuki Matsumoto (7-5-0) get it on.

And that’s it!

Of course it’s not, but frankly Sherdog is probably the worlds biggest MMA website and if they don’t have the information then I have to assume it does not exist.

I mean really if you don’t want the world to know about your event fine, but really?

I’m not going to spend hours of my time finding shit to publicise your events if you don’t want to make it easy.

Just in case you wanted to know why all the talk in Asian MMA is about ONE FC, Legend, SFL, URCC,    DARE, etc these days and why Japan seems to have fallen so far since the days of Pride, maybe, just maybe it’s down to the fact that they make their websites accessible and keep people informed in English. And sure it’s OK to be proud of your country and your language, believe me NOBODY is more proud of their country or language than the guys at the URCC but they know that a huge portion of the worlds MMA fans are English-speaking and they run a business.

Many websites like mine are ready, willing and able to promote your stuff but we cannot do it if you don’t help us. I am aware that the “Gig” events are small and for up and coming fighters however I’m sure like all events publicity is a fuel that feeds the machine.

UPDATE: Our friend Holla@yourboy sent me a new link and I managed to hit the right page with the card - You can find it HERE thanks man!

Shooto and Pancrase Results

Shooto and Pancrase Results

Published on June 3, 2012 by The Editor in Pancrase, Shooto
(Records shown for all fighters are from before these events took part)

Shooto Disco 18 Results

2nd June 2012 – Shinjuku Face, Tokyo, Japan

Another two round fest of potential draws from Japanese MMA

Bout 1: Jun Nabeshima (1-3-1)  beat Tomoaki Ota (0-2-1) via Knock Out 4:48 Rd 2

Bout 2: Yuta Sato (1-1-0) beat Jun Doi (4-0-0) Via Unanimous Decision

Bout 3: Taijiro Iseki (0-3-0) beat Hiroaki Sakuma (2-8-0) by Unanimous Decision (that puts Sakuma’s losing streak up to 8 in a row I’m sure he will be back again becuause Japanese MMA seems to like to keep fighters working that no other organisation would touch)

Bout 4: Daiki Gojima (1-1-0) Vs Kiyoshi Kitamura (0-1-0)  Majority Draw – Seriously people let’s have a third round!

Bout 5: Itsuki Hiruma (1-1-0) beat Takahito Tomozawa (0-3-2) of course he did Tomozawa does not know what a win looks like – Look out for him again soon!

Bout 6: Takeshi Sato (2-2-0)  beat Tomohiro Hagino (0-1-0) via Knockout 4:13 Rd 1

Bout 7: Taafumi Ato (3-3-0) beat Shuichiro Okumura (2-3-1) by Unanimous Decision

Bout 8: Daiki Gojima (1-1-0) beat Kiyoshi Kitamura (0-1-0) by Majority Decision with so many of these fights going to decision I bet a hell of a lot of these decisions are controversial. I wonder if they have two rounds in Japanese MMA so that those who run gambling syndicates can easily control the outcome. Just a thought, if you don’t like it how about three fucking rounds?

Bout 9: Hiroaki Fujita (0-3-0) beat Komei Okada (6-14-2) vis knockout 2:16 Rd 2

Bout 10: Daiki Takashima (3-1-1) beat Satoshi Inaba (8-6-2) by Majority Decision Yes yet again Takashima takes it to a decision and gets the win – This man cannot win a fight before the final bell rings.

Bout 11: Akinobu Watanabe (6-5-2)beat  Hiroaki Ijima (4-5-2) by Majority Decision

Bout 12: Tadaaki Yamamoto (7-1-2) beat Takeshi Sato (9-11-1) by Knockout punches 1:52 Rd 1
Pancrase Progress Tour 7 Results:

June 2nd 2012 ~ Differ Ariake, Tokyo, Japan

This looks nothing like the card I previewed as listed on Sherdog – For that I apologise but I cannot make head or tail of the Pancrase website, Unless you wanna help us out it’s the best we can do.
I have been on the Pancrase Website and Facebook page but still cannot see the results, they might be there but it’s all Japanese to me literally! So I had to go to Sherdog.com and use what they have, No results for the first four fights so far.

Bout 1: Yuya Ono (1-4-1)  Vs Chikara Shimabukuro (6-5-3)

Bout 2: Suguru Hayasaka (7-4-4) Vs Kengo Ito (1-0-0)

Bout 3: Junya Nishikawa (4-4-1)  Vs Toru Kanamori (4-3-0)

Bout 4: Kenji Nagaki (4-2-0) Vs Hirotaka Uehara (2-2-0)

Bout 5: Shunpei Ota (no record) beat Hideo Matsui (3-13-2) ia TKO punches 1:40 Rd 2

Bout 6: Yuki Baba (7-2-0) beat Massaomi Saito (5-8- 0) via TKO punches 0:32 Rd 1

Bout 7: Seiji Ozuka (12-9-7) beat Yuki Uejima (5-4-5) by Unanimous Decision

Bout 8: Yuki Yasunaga (8-5-0) Vs Goro Kobayashi (5-5-6) by Unanimous Decision exactly as predicted

Bout 9:  Ikkei Nagamura (7-4-2) beat Yuji Hisamatsu (15-20-6) by Unanimous Decision

Bout 10: Guy Delumeau (15-6-3) beat Yo Saito  (8-7-2) by Knockout by Slam at 0:21 Rd 1

Bout 11: Shintaro Ishiwateri (12-4-4) beat Nobutaka Hiyoshi (2-1-0) by Unanimous Decision

Bout 12: Takasuke Kume (12-1-4) beat Koji Nakamura(8-6-3)  vua Submission due to a Triangle Choke 1:58 Rd 2

Bout 13: Takumi Nakayama (16-13-5-1) beat Jon Shores (10-0-0) Via Submission due to Rear Naked Choke 2:47 Round 3 (what’s that a third round, see it’s amazing what can happen with three rounds)

Bout 14: Ryo Kawamura (14-6-4) beat Shingo Oyama (13-13-0) Via Knockout due to a Soccer Kick 4:19 Rd 1

(note: as well as fighting for Pancrase Ryo Kawamura is also the Executive Manager of Pancrase although that is due to change see the story below)

The latest news is from Sherdog.com is that the Former Japanese Wrestling Promotion Smash have just completed the take over of Pancrase.

Smash CEO Masakazu Sakai will take over from Ryo Kawamura and it was also announced that both Pancrase and Deep will merge their amateur systems into Japanese MMA License, Standardising weight classes and rules. They will also be looking at staging some cage fights.

It also sounds like the new company is going to try to manage Pancrase fighters and their sponsorships. Not something I am keen on I think fighters should have freedom with their contracts and sponsorships.
I certainly hope we will start to see improvements in Pancrase, let’s start with all fights being three rounders please!

Shooto Gig Tokyo 9 – Preview

Shooto Gig Tokyo 9 – Preview

Published on April 9, 2012 by The Editor in X-Shooto

Well Here’s My Preview of Shooto Gig Tokyo 9 or is it?

We have been through this before, Sadly, I don’t speak or read Japanese and Shooto don’t really have an English version of their site  just a google or whatever translated on the fly thing. So, all I can do it put up what I think is the Fight Card and go through it, but it could of course all be bollocks! I have no idea of the Fight card Order, so apologies for any mess ups.

Bout:
Yuta Sasaki Vs Kazuhiro Ito

Sasaki (8-1-1) his last seven fights have all gone to decision and although he has won five of them and he obviously is a durable fighter, he’s only young and obviously will improve with more experience.

Ito (5-8-1) looks to me to be a dead weight for Sasaki to gain another win against, he has not won any of his last six fights, in fact he has not won in three years.

Bout:
Yosuke Saruta Vs Hiroshi Osato

Saruta (3-3-1) has spent his whole career in Shooto and it’s been a mixed bag of results

Osato (4-2-1) another all Shooto fighter, unlike Saruta, Oasto has never won by anything other than a decision, So I don’t see this one being any different. He either takes it the distance and then it’s a crap shoot of judges or Osato stops him.
Bout:

Yuta Nezu Vs Takuya Ogura

Nezu (10-6-1) is by far the more experienced fighter here although both of them are on the back of a two fight losing streak.

Ogura (4-4-0)

Bout:
Takeshi Saito (2-1-0) Vs Takashi Kajikawa (no record)

Bout:
Hideto Okada Vs Hiroshi Roppongi

Okada (0-2-1) all three fights have gone to decision, so he’s tough, but he has yet to find out what it takes to win.

Roppongi (0-2-0) also has no idea what it’s like to win, so unless these two stumble upon a draw one of them will have a nice W on his record.

Bout:
Kirohito Kodama Vs Tomoaki Ota

Kodama (2-0-0)

Ota (0-1-1) Two fights in three years, no wins, I spy a piece of meat to help Kodama get another W on his record.

Bout:
Ukyo Abe Vs Yoshida

Abe (0-1-0)

Yoshida – The website is not very clear on this one, I am sure that Yoshida’s first name is not 16gou so, I can’t really tell you anything except it’s his debut.

Bout:
Takanori Takahashi (1-1-0) Vs  Toshiro Chihama (no record)

Bout: Main Event

Takahiro Hosoi Vs Kenji Yamamoto

Hosoi (6-7-2) has had a real shaky run of late, it’s almost, win one, lose one, draw one, repeat, he may need to improve a lot to really make any sort of career out of this fighting lark!

Yamamoto (3-1-0) had a nice little three fight winning streak going and then it all came tumbling down when he met Akihito Ishihara who punched his lights out in just 16 seconds back in September 2011.
This apparently is a Main Event bout, beats me I guess, um OK what ever, it’s not very exciting is it?
So that is it. I’m not sure what to make of it, It actually looks like it might be a fun event, not top quality stuff, sure, but could be a lot of fun.

What’s Happening This Weekend ?

What’s Happening This Weekend ? – Saturday 21st

Published on January 17, 2012 by  in EventX-Shooto
This weekend we have a choice of few events in Asia
Sadly ,the biggest issue I have in telling you about these events is the websites are not very helpful to non Japanese speakers, but for you dear readers I will try to help you make sense of it. Ultimately all the events details can )possibly) be found on the organisations own website (Direct Links at the top of the page).
Saturday 21st is X-Shooto’s Gig Tokyo Vol. 8
So Shooto Gig Tokyo Vol. 8 – Well this website at least has an English language tag, sadly the newest news in English appears to be from 2005! So, it’s google translate or nothing!
So here’s what I can get from the site:
Saturday January 21st at 6:00pm (doors open 5:30) at Tokyo Shinjuku FACE.
There are 8 fights.
Fight 1: @ Flyweight
Atsushi Makigaya (5-4-2)  (3 losses and 2 draws in his last 5 fights) Vs Kirihito Kodama (1-0-0)
Fight 2: @ Light Heavyweight
Yutaka Saito (1-0-0) Vs Shinya Yoshida (0-0-0)
Fight 3: @ 68kg
Masakazu Taguci (2-6-1) Vs Hiroaki Nakayama (3-5-1)
Fight 4: @ Lightweight Bout
Yo Saito (5-6-2) Vs Minoru Takeuchi (4-1-1)
Fight 5: @ Bantanweight
Akinobu Watanabe (6-5-1) Vs Masumi Tozawa (3-4-3)
Fight 6: @ Featherweight
Kota Onojima (4-1-0) Vs Won Seok Jung (1-0-0)
Fight 7: @ Bantamweight
Kosuke ‘Rambo’ Suzuki (4-2-2) Vs Yoshiyuki Takano (2-5-0)
Fight 8: @ Flyweight
Yusei Shimokawa (6-6-1) Vs Takeshi ‘Heat Takeshi’ Sato (8-9-2)

Shooto Survivor Tournament Final – 8th January. Tokyo

Shooto Survivor Tournament Final – 8th January. Tokyo

Published on January 1, 2012 by  in EventX-Shooto

On Sunday January 8th X-Shoot presents – Shooto Survivor Tournament Final at the Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan

Shooto Survivor Tournament Final Fight Card and Predictions
(Lightweight) Fumihiko Kawamura (1-3-0) Vs Yohei Ota (6-11-2)
So this fight pits Ota who must have forgotten what a win feels like as his last one was in 2005, and his last loss saw him knocked out in just 28 seconds, against Kawamura who has much less experience and only one win in a four fight career. I have to go with Kawamura just because he must be much less battle weary and he can remember what the warm embrace of a win feels like. Kawamura to Win.
(Lightweight) Koji Nishioka (4-1-4)  Vs Aklra Okada (2-2-2)
I am going for a DRAW here, neither man seems capable of finishing an opponent.
(Flyweight) Massaki Sugawara (11-6-1) Vs Haruo Ochi (7-2-1)
Coming off of a three fight win streak Ochi must be favorite here based upon recent form, but Sugawara has his moments including a 14 second knockout win.  I predict Sugawara to Win.
(Welterweight) Keita “K-Taro) Nakamura (21-5-2)  Vs Yoichiro Sato (8-4-2)
I cannot see past the vastly more experienced Nakamura, Sato has no wins in three and I suspect Nakamura himself coming off of a loss wants to end this quickly look for it to go to the ground and Nakamura to submit Sato.
(Bantanweight) Masakatsu Ueda (14-1-2) Vs Kyoji Horiguchi (6-0-0)
Masakatsu is coming in to this fight on a four fight win streak after sending Royler Gracie into retirement with a split decision back in September in Gracies own backyard Brazil. Horiguchi though himself is coming off of a six fight win streak and has a 13 year age advantage, he is a very good striker and has yet to go the distance. The question is can he cope with Masakatsu’s ground game? I say yes and haveHoriguchi to Win.
(Bantanweight) Hiromasa Ogikubo (8-2-2) Vs Tetsu “Hadairo” Suzuki (13-8-3)
It’s all about the older man in this one for me Suzuki is ten years older and I think his experience will tell. His losses all come by way of decision which seems to suggest he has a good strong chin and ground defence. Ogukubo has unlike Suzuki won most of his fights via Decision and if he can keep Suzuki standing he should get the decision. I think Suzuki though will get him down and submit him. Suzuki to Win.
(Featherweight) Guy Delumeau (15-6-2) Vs Wataru Miki (18-10-5)
Guy Delumeau has three wins in a row, although all were by decision. One thing he should have a is solid cardio as he has proven time and again he is capable of going the distance. Miki also is used to going the distance and he has 2 wins and 2 draws in his last four fights. A clear winner is hard to pick I suspect Miki has the advantage if it goes to the ground, in a stand up fight it could go to the judges. I pick Delumeau to Win.

This picks are just a bit of fun, but if you disagree with them feel free to write and tell me.
